Had an amazing birthday visit. The flight display at 10:30 was fantastic to see and learn about the birds. The presenters clearly have a love for the birds and work great with adults as well as small children. Would definitely visit again

Most other things—to—do were closed over Christmas weekend, but African Birds of Prey Sanctuary. We like that each bird has a name and their stories are detailed on a leaflet (not just scientific facts). Field guide is really knowledgable and it is a treat watching the vultures being fed.

A very ethical outfit, close to Pietermaritzburg, run by an extremely competent raptor specialist, who is experienced in behaviour and mangement of birds of prey. The aerial display focuses on the conservation of raptors. All birds used there are non-releasable and they are housed in enclosures that are as similar as possible to the birds natural environment. Note: 2 shows per day - 10.30am and 15h00 pm. Mid-day Vulture feeding is a fascinating experience; Coffee Shop; Curios; Kids play area

The African Bird of Prey Sanctuary provides not only an educational experience but also a high quality afternoon / morning out at a very reasonable price. The Sanctuary is small but plays an important role in raising the awareness of the conservation needs of South African raptors. All of the birds are rescue birds which can no longer be released back into the wild. The aerial display is approximately an hour long, entertaining and humorous and full of fascinating information which will appeal to young and old.

The Sanctuary is clean and well looked after and includes a picnic area where you can 'bring your own' as well as a cafe. It is certainly well worth a visit - just remember sun-cream for the display as the seating area is uncovered.

To miss out on this attraction would be a major mistake ; to do so after reading the reviews would count as one big Himalayan Blunder . Easily approachable from Durban for the 1030 AM show . This is an absolute must in Kwazulu Natal . Very informative and interesting . Welcome team comprises two very affectionate pointers . Shannon is phenomenal in her love and dedication to this cause . The souvenirs and tea room are reasonably priced . It would be wise to ring up before leaving Durban as the weather might play up . The show is out in the Sun and sunscreen / caps /shades would be desirable . The website has all essential info .

Hot tip - Go around the bird enclosures twice if you have the time - preferably before and after the show . The birds are very active and the second round might find them in a better view .
The lovely Colonial Buildings square of Pietermaritzburg is just a 15 minutes drive away GPS S 29.60184 E 30.37895 .

We visited the African BoP sanctuary on a chilly and drizzly day. We didn't expect a presentation but Shannon and Belinda did a short presentation so we (and the birds) did not get too wet and still had the opportunity to marvel at the flight display. They even gave us umbrellas so we could be comfortable. The presentation was educational and we enjoyed learning about the different characters. Despite being limited in enclosure sizes it is very clear that the sanctuary tries to ensure a high standard of living for all the birds, some of which have experienced such cruel fates at the hands of humans. In addition to education and rehabilitation, the sanctuary is also involved in other conservation projects e.g. The bearded vulture breeding programme. If you're ever in the camperdown area, the sanctuary is a must visit and you can feel great knowing your ticket purchase is contributing to conservation

This is a regular place for us to visit, be it with my daughter or with international guests. This dedicated team work tirelessly to rehabilitate raptors and return them to the wilds if possible. They provide a invaluable service and are great in educating everyone about raptors. The sanctuary is very well maintained and the birds are kept in a great environment. There is always a lot to see in the resident raptors as well as an amazing on-air display. The team are always friendly and informative and the cafe provides great food and beverages.
This is a "must see" in you are in KZN anywhere near Pietermaritzburg or Durban.

Lots of birds of prey to see and a fantastic view from the sanctuary. Not far away is the Lion Park which doesn't seem to have been reviewed on here. It's quite small and you drive around in your own car. There were 11 lions there last time I went, including two white lions, and you literally get right up close to them. It's wonderful. Loads of fabulous photo opportunities.

Absolutely WORTH IT!! Seriously. They should charge more. Incredibly informative, beautiful birds and the only place in the world that has Bearded Vultures in captivity (they're part of a breeding program to try up their numbers). Amazing!
You can tell they really care about the birds they have - many of these birds would have died in the wild if they had not been rescued. I can't wait to take family and friends and have a look again.
