Shocking shocking shocking to see how this beautiful historical building has been allowed to disintegrate. Not even the clock works anymore. Filth and litter around the building. Inside the building is dirty. The toilets are horrific. The vagrants around the building do not make it a safe place to visit.

This building is a famous and distinctive one, with its red-and-white striped architecture and central position in the city. But it does not appear well-maintained, the area round it seems depressed, parking is difficult to find and the tourist information office not well-informed. Perhaps these are indications of the tough economic times we live in.

This is reputedly the largest red brick building in the southern hemisphere. With its gorgeous architecture and many unique features, it is an eye catcher of note. The Pietermaritzburg City Hall is apparently also home to the largest organ in the southern hemisphere. It is packed with history and the wonderful thing thing is that it hosts some of the nicest events in the city, including the Drakensberg Boys Choir, that brings Pietermaritzburg together under its roof. The Comrades Marathon Down Run also starts at this epic location, which has been going on since 1921.
