We had a day to spare in Durban and thought this would be a good way to both get some exercise and learn something about the area. We did get both but were very disappointed with the quality of the bikes - all were old, two had no gears (and those with gears were not great).

Response from BikeAndSaddle-Trips, Public Relations Manager at Bike & Saddle
Responded 25 Oct 2016
Dear Mary G, Thank you for your feedback and taking time to write an review. About the gear, the city tour in Durban is very flat, so it's actually most suitable with no gear bikes. About the comments about the quality, we will take proper actions. Hope to see you again. Your Bike&Saddle team

I should have headed the warning signs from the get-go: trying to book a tour with this company was like pulling teeth. It was very difficult to get anyone to respond and the process of booking everything took forever. Eventually, my partner and I did book (and paid for) a tour to the townships. We arrived to the meeting location on time (which is at a hotel), and were surprised to be met not by our tour guide, but by a staff member at the hotel. We were taken to a small office to speak on the phone with the owner of the company, who explained that our tour would need to be changed because there was some civil unrest in the townships and it may not be safe. Ok. We were willing to forgive them of that, it was out of their control. However, we couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't attempted to contact us directly beforehand. He had our contact information, and could have saved us the trip across town and given us time to make other arrangements for our day. This was pretty off-putting, but we were willing to let it go. We were offered an alternative (much cheaper) "city tour," to which we agreed because the morning was ticking on and we didn't want waste half our day making new plans. We were told that we would be refunded for the difference in cost of the tour, which was a few hundred dollars. We were also told our guide would arrive shortly. He finally showed up two hours late. The tour itself wasn't very good, probably because the guide had prepared for a different tour and had to change his plans on the fly. We were taken through some pretty sketchy parts of the city (the parts the hotel manger had warned us to avoid), which really didn't feel too welcoming towards a couple of North American tourists. But even this we were willing to forgive. Then we tried to get in touch with the company about the refund we were promised. That's when contact stopped entirely. We attempted to contact them ten times over the course of a few months. Once and a while we would get a brusque response, like "sorry been busy will deal with this tomorrow." He never did deal with it. In the end, we had no option but to provide the credit card company with a package including all of interactions and have them reverse the charge for us. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY. They are, at best, EXTREMELY disorganized. At worst, DISHONEST.

We were limited by our conference schedule as to our tour dates, and the weather did not cooperate for an optimum bicycle tour. So, Dionne worked around it, picked us up at our hotel, and made sure that we saw all the highlights even in the rain! Dionne was quite attentive to history as well as current events and also our safety and comfort. Thanks for a great morning! Barbara Mansholt, Bettendorf, Iowa

The tour was informative and well presented. I really enjoyed the relaxed cuise around the City of Durban with regular stops at places of interest. I have lived in Durban all my life and still learnt about the history. I would recommend the tour for Tourists and Durbanites alike. The tour was rounded off with some delicious snacks and drinks at the pool deck.
