Street Scene Tours was created by Sthembiso Mbonanbi, Jonas Barausse and Richard Powell, in early 2010, with one unique goal set at its core; to showcase Durban to Durbanites. As you can imagine this is by no means the conventional stance of a tour operator, but Street Scene is not your conventional tour operator. They are constantly exploring Durban and its surrounds, ever on the lookout for nuggets of history and the many hidden gems the province has to offer.Durban and its surrounding areas are filled with a rich tapestry of history which is largely unknown not only to tourists, but also its residents. After all, Mahatma Gandhi made Durban his home for many years, and it was just outside Durban that Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the 1994 elections that forever changed South Africa. The great King Shaka Zulu also spent much time on the very land upon which Durbanites now call home. From the city's architecture to its people, Street Scene aims to engulf its guests in all that is Durban. They started out with their focus on locals but soon realized that when you create a set of tours that residents of the city love, you are guaranteed to have tours that visitors to the city will find riveting and unique. There is nothing conventional about Street Scene Tours, and that's just the way we like it.

I can't praise Street Scene enough! Professional, down to earth Durbanites who love their city and are maximumly enthusiastic about you loving it too and having the best time possible! This is my second tour with them and it is a communal decision that all further birthday celebrations should be with these glorious folks! If you are interested, do it,... More

They guys at street scene recently put together a custom tour for us around Durban to celebrate my husband's birthday and it was absolutely fantastic! From craft beers and burgers, to beachfront drinks then exotic cocktails in Umhlanga it was an absolutely perfect day and such a pleasure to not have to worry about a thing! The team at Street... These guys offer exactly the kind of tour I enjoy - an opportunity to explore the real, gritty, exciting, vibrant, urban side to the city. I've visited Durban all my life and never experienced it the way I experienced it with Sthembiso and Jonas. They are professional, relaxed, knowledgeable locals and its obvious that they love nothing more than offering... More

As a very keen amateur photographer I was overwhelmed by the quality and the standard of the Durban graffiti. Most enjoyable and informative day. Street Scene Tours rock

I had an awesome time travelling around Durban learning more about the art and graffiti scene, meeting a few new people interested in understanding more about movements in the sub cultures of our city. We were treated to a rad lunch at Unity Bar, which I really enjoyed the home brew of beers and the very tasty veg burger. The... More

I was unsure of what to expect but I could never have imagined what an amazing, experiential, immersing day it turned out to be. It was definitely a highlight of my week in Durban. Sthembiso was a passionate, kind, patient, informative guide. It is a day I will not ever forget. Ngiyabonga kakhulu!

I recently toured South Africa for 3 weeks with friends. Since my return to the U.S., I find myself talking about this tour more often than all the fantastic experiences we had on our visit. Our Street Scene guide was exceptional with sharing his passion and knowledge of the area. I felt fully immersed into the culture. I would highly... More

I thought this tour would be a quick glimpse of Durban highlights. Instead, it was an in-your-face experience I'll never forget. We wouldn't see what we saw, or meet the people we met if we were on our own. And touring with Sthembiso was the icing on the cake. He didn't simply point things out. He explained things to us... Our guide, Sthembiso, offered so much more than a "tour;" he offered a window into his home, quite literally, as he expertly shared the history, culture and politics of Durban. A trained educator and inspired citizen, he brought the beauty and struggles, the unchanged and the changing of South Africa to us through not merely words but the vivid sights,... More
