Street Scene Tours was created by Sthembiso Mbonanbi, Jonas Barausse and Richard Powell, in early 2010, with one unique goal set at its core; to showcase Durban to Durbanites. As you can imagine this is by no means the conventional stance of a tour operator, but Street Scene is not your conventional tour operator. They are constantly exploring Durban and its surrounds, ever on the lookout for nuggets of history and the many hidden gems the province has to offer.Durban and its surrounding areas are filled with a rich tapestry of history which is largely unknown not only to tourists, but also its residents. After all, Mahatma Gandhi made Durban his home for many years, and it was just outside Durban that Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the 1994 elections that forever changed South Africa. The great King Shaka Zulu also spent much time on the very land upon which Durbanites now call home. From the city's architecture to its people, Street Scene aims to engulf its guests in all that is Durban. They started out with their focus on locals but soon realized that when you create a set of tours that residents of the city love, you are guaranteed to have tours that visitors to the city will find riveting and unique. There is nothing conventional about Street Scene Tours, and that's just the way we like it.

On 29 December we were lucky enough to get a drive/walk tour of Durban city centre by Street Scene founder, the peerless Sthembiso Mbonambi. Our impeccable guide not only took us around Durban's ethnic spice, meat and clothes markets but he also gave us a fascinating crash course in Zulu history and culture. Last but definitely not least, he treated... More

4 of us did the three hour walking tour. Starting off at the Anglican Church and hearing about the history from the rector, then onto alocal mosque and learning more from the local Iman. Then we were taken to the local markets, hair style studios, as hair dos are a must for any self respecting Zulu. The markets blew us... More

I Really enjoyed this experience it was an eye opener to how people thrive in local businesses and the creativeness of marketing their goods. I especially enjoyed going to the churches and had loads of fun in the taxi ride and that you can get awesome fruit that is so cheap. Its a good idea to wear comfortable walking shoes... More

Being a Durbanite you think you have seen Durban. Well not quite true, there is so much more that we do not know. Street Scene walk is a great way to experience what central Durban is all about.

As a South African, who has not really found himself immersed in a large part of our culture that sits on our doorstep, Street Scene offer a great package which enables a safe way to do so. Visiting Shebeens and enjoying a traditional Shisanyama was truly unforgettable. We always felt safe and the food was brilliant. I really enjoyed hearing... More
