Street Scene Tours was created by Sthembiso Mbonanbi, Jonas Barausse and Richard Powell, in early 2010, with one unique goal set at its core; to showcase Durban to Durbanites. As you can imagine this is by no means the conventional stance of a tour operator, but Street Scene is not your conventional tour operator. They are constantly exploring Durban and its surrounds, ever on the lookout for nuggets of history and the many hidden gems the province has to offer.Durban and its surrounding areas are filled with a rich tapestry of history which is largely unknown not only to tourists, but also its residents. After all, Mahatma Gandhi made Durban his home for many years, and it was just outside Durban that Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the 1994 elections that forever changed South Africa. The great King Shaka Zulu also spent much time on the very land upon which Durbanites now call home. From the city's architecture to its people, Street Scene aims to engulf its guests in all that is Durban. They started out with their focus on locals but soon realized that when you create a set of tours that residents of the city love, you are guaranteed to have tours that visitors to the city will find riveting and unique. There is nothing conventional about Street Scene Tours, and that's just the way we like it.

I really enjoyed this tour. From the perspective of someone who grew up in Durban It really showed me a side of my city that I'd never seen before. The tour guides were knowledgable and friendly and were willing to answer any questions our group had. I feel like the tour really tries to allow access to a special and... More

When my birthday was approaching this year, I was looking for something different, fun and memorable to do with my 20 closet friends. All the usual birthday shenanigans didn’t really appeal to me, and when I remembered the Street Scene Tour that two of my closest friends had been on with their band mates a few weeks before, it seemed... I'm not a reviewer or writer of any sort but I felt compelled to share the tour I went on recently with Street Scene tours. For the Locals: As a born and bred Durbanite (or Durbanide if you talk Durban) I assumed I knew what this city was about. I was quite pleased to see the itinerary went places I... More

I had the pleasure of using Street Scene during my recent business trip to Durban. I wanted to see something out of my hotel during the 6 hours I had free and Street Scene seemed to offer thoughtful and very interesting tours. I spoke to Richard over email on many occasions about ideas I had. Richard responded quickly and helpfully... More

Finding Richard and Sthembiso via tripadvisor was a real gem on our recent tour of South Africa. As a family of four with two teenage boys, having just visited Kruger we were looking to chill out in Durban and experience something new. Durban with its fantastic beaches provided the chill factor. The township tour certainly was unique and inspiring. Streetscene... More

I learned about Street Scene Tours from here on tripadvisor.com when searching for things to do for a recent weekend trip to Durban (as a solo female traveler, late 20s). I don't like touristy things, so guided tours are not usually on my itinerary in new cities, but after reading the reviews and checking out the website, I felt like... More

We came over to South Africa for a month, spending a week in Durban, and we just so happened to find out about Street Scene as we were scouring the internet for things to do. As soon as we had received a response from Richard, which was almost immediately after we'd initially made contact, we knew we would be opting... More

I was lucky to have found Street Scene Tours thanks to tripadvisor and a previous guest at Rosetta House, I was not disappointed. Richard Powell and his business partner Sthembiso make a good combination, Richard is a Durban guy and S'the cames from a township and is very knowledgeable on African culture. The tours they do are not the normal... More
