Enjoyed my walk along the Durban beachfront - it is a long promenade— some 7 kilometres from the Blue Lagoon to Point Beaches. Only negative is that you do get hustled by a few beggars along the way - you have to tell them very firmly No then they leave you alone. The promenade is cleaned every morning and law enforcement is present every 2 kilometres or so.

I walked along parts of the Golden Mile on several occasions during any stay in Durban. As I was staying at the Hilton about a mile away on foot, it was not safe to carry my camera from the hotel to the Golden Mile. If you are staying in one of the hotels along the Golden Mile or on a tour, then it would be safe to take photos during the day time. There is a high level of security, so one tends not to be bothered. There are several piers along the mile, restaurants, vars and outdoor swimming pools. The beach is good for sunbathing and the sea is perfect if you enjoy surfing. There are manned public toilets along the promenade. There is space for walking, cycling and rollerblading, and is a great way to spend a good hour throughout the day for a walk and watch the world go by.

Walking along the golden mile this morning was nothing short of breathtaking. Durban was lit up with glorious sunshine, glistening off the warm and welcoming waters of the Indian Ocean, with scores of surfers and bathers. The mood was chilled, exciting and inviting, all in one. Such are Durban peeps and the daily vibe. The new promenade makes for a nice nearly 6km walk one way, and it's perfectly suited for walkers, strollers, joggers, cyclists, skateboarders and their dog, the ideal pastime for any day of the week. Gotta love Durban!

This long stretch of sandy beach and esplanade look very appealing. There are good walking paths, some food vendors, a long expanse of sand with a couple of patrolled sections and some stalls selling surf gear, clothing and general tourist curios. But although we didn’t see any problems we were advised to be cautious.

Recently spent a short time (intended to stay longer but not much to do/see) on the Golden Mile.
Beach looks nice and not over-populated.
HOWEVER we were advised by a number of shop-keepers not to wander into the back streets off the Golden Mile as it was unsafe to do so.
This was mid-afternoon!!!!
Didn't see much in the way of restaurants etc so would check carefully before booking accommodation here. There are better places in Durban.

It was a brilliant idea to create this spacious area for people of all cultures and different walks of life to walk, cyle, jog and mingle. Good excersize and socially good for all. The ony problem that I do have is that there are certain areas where the is a very heavy stench of urine and excretement as well as huge amounts of litter including alcohol bottles in certain areas. This is especially noticeable in front of the Addington hospital. I noticed that during December the smell and litter disappeared and it was great to be able to walk or cycle along the whole area. Now that the season is over, its back to this nauseating smell and litter. Is it not possible to prevent this on a continuous basis. Not only is it unacceptable for our locals, we also have tourists visiting and spending money here and this does not assist in encouraging people ot visit our beautiful beaches.

What a great way to spend time excersing, whether it be walking, running, skating, cycling.... for all ages. Well organised and controlled by differing enforcements, with regards security etc. Toilets seems well looked after...
The new promonade is also a welcome addition and creates a larger area.
Enjoy the outdoors

It is possible to easily walk from Suncoast Casino, past Durban Main beaches, past Ushaka Marine World onto North Beach walk, right up to the Harbour entrance. (Saw a cruise ship entering harbour) Very clean walk. Security Guards visible along along. Many restuarants and bars along the way.

The most beautiful breathtaking coast Durbanites can be Proud of.
The view as one strolls down the Golden Mile is breathtaking.
The joys of being one with the Ocean. Either you walk on the Beach or take a romantic stroll with a Loved One on the promenade - its a joy. Plenty of eatery along the way catering for every palette. A place to get the kids off the Couch and spend some over due family time. Swim, surf , walk, go fishing, just sit on the beach - there is something for everyone to do.
New promenade is your go to place for 2020.

The Golden Mile is a great promenade to walk on. If you're lucky you'll see magnificent sand art, made by one of the local people. However, you need to be vigilant as there are opportunists around who may become interested in your handbag, etc. There is, however, constant patrolling taking place.

I would like to renew wedding vows on a beach in Durban South Africa do you have any suggestions?

We would like to walk the Golden Mile but have an elderly man with us who can't walk far. Can we rent a wheelchair somewhere?
Written 25 July 2019
Hi. You may not find a wheelchair but you could hire a rickshaw which will be a unique experience. You will find these on the promenade and no booking is needed.

I agree with the two responses already sent, that the best way is by taking a taxi. There is also parking available to leave your car while on a cruise. Trust this will assist.
