Having used Vhupo Tours on a previous occasion, they were the obvious choice for our trip. The communication with Bruce is excellent, and this helped us to ensure our transfers from both International & Internal flights ran exceptionally smoothly. Sello our driver for the transfers was excellent, and we felt confident with him at all times.
Bruce was our guide for both an evening Shebeen trip & a guided tour of Soweto. As a local, his knowledge of the area is exceptional, and his tours include all elements of Soweto, resulting in a greater understanding of the area.
Bruce and his fellow employees deserve to be successful in their endeavour's, and we would have no hesitation in recommending them when planning a trip to South Africa.

We went on a tour to Soweto as a family. The tour was incredibly interesting. Bruce was a prefect tour guide, shared his experiences and knowledge with us, was very considerate and always open for all of our questions. We surely recommend this tour of Soweto. Thank you very much & all the best!

We went with Bruce, who is from Soweto, and is part of Vhupotours (www.vhupo-tours.com) to visit this township. Bruce was very knowledgeable and it was far more than a "drive-by" tour. He really knows the place, having grown up there. He was a font of information. The tour included just me, another woman, and my husband. The tour not only talked about Soweto's important past, but also its present. We saw upper middle class, working class, and poor people's houses. We went on a walking tour in a poor area, led by locals, and visited a preschool. A plus is that it was very easy to understand Bruce (to my American ears, it is not always easy to understand people). I couldn't recommend this tour more highly.

Two weeks before traveling to Johannesburg I arranged for this tour to pick me up at the airport for the Soweto tour. They confirmed the tour via email (date and flight number were provided to them correctly). When we arrived to Johannesburg (4 adults) they were not waiting for us. my husband called the company and they said "sorry we had the date wrong". I spent hours home planning my trip, so I could have everything arranged in South Africa, this was the only company that did not provide the service that I requested and booked. I am very disappointed.

Very insightful tour on our first day in South Africa. Bruce, our guide was excellent and provided a lot of information about Soweto and South Africa in general. I'd thoroughly recommend Vhupo and Bruce in particular.

Bruce grew up in Soweto and is a current resident, so he has insider knowledge of Soweto and its culture. He told us in excellent English about its history and what it is like to live there now and during apartheid. Bruce is very friendly and a mine of information. We had a most enjoyable tour and learned a lot.

With only one day in Johannesburg, we were fortunate enough to tour Soweto with Bruce. The tour was professional, insightful and a highlight of our two week trip to South Africa. Bruce is an incredible guide who grew up in Soweto and continues to call this vibrant place home. Tours can be customized to your interests and may include a transfer to the airport. Thanks, Bruce!

We decided to book our Soweto tour with Vhupo Tours mainly because of the positive reviews on Tripadvisor. Bruce has offered us a private afternoon tour to Soweto for ZAR 990 for two persons. Pick up from Melville was included. This sounded like a good deal. We were surprised a guy called Lenny came to our B&B for the tour with his mini-bus, because we were expecting Bruce would be our guide for this afternoon. Lenny was very friendly and he directly started explaining a lot about Johannesburg and Soweto. After a short stop at the Soccer City Stadium we went to a wealthy area in Soweto. This neighborhood had neatly landscaped yards, quaint houses, driveways, etc.
After driving through various neighborhoods and along a shanty town and Orlando towers, we arrived at the Walter Sisulu Square. Here we made a short walk and visited the Freedom Charter, which is the basis of today's Constitution. From here we drove to the former home of Nelson Mandela in Vilakazi Street. He lived in this house up until he was arrested in 1963. Today, the house serves as a museum, which we visited (extra payable). We also drove along the houses of Desmond Tutu and Winnie Mandela.
Then we drove to the Hector Pierson museum. We spend about 45 minutes inside this museum (entrance fee was included in the tour). After our visit Lenny suddenly said the tour was over because he doesn’t know what to do anymore. If we had any suggestions they would be honored, otherwise we would drive back to our B&B. We were surprised by this and asked if it was possible to visit a shanty town, because that was what we had read about in the reviews on Tripadvisor. Lenny drove us to Motsoaledi where another guide waited for us (extra payable). Unfortunately this guide was very lazy. He dropped us back at the mini bus after about 10 minutes. We specially asked to visit a shanty house, so we could see how people live here, but he only took us to a small Kindergarten. All in all we were disappointed about this short shanty town tour, it really missed our expectations.
At the end we were happy with this Soweto tour but we were not very excited. Our guide Lenny was referring to appointments we made with Bruce, but we never made any. To us the whole tour looked like a standard tourist tour, so nothing special and no insight in the way people live in the different levels in Soweto these days, as stated in other reviews on TA.

I had tried to arrange a tour prior to arrival but was told by another company that they couldn't accommodate one person. When I arrived at my hotel - the excellent City Lodge Hotel Newtown - the front desk person, Prudence, organised a tour to the Cradle of Humankind for a couple of hours later. I was tired as anything from a long flight but the hotel and Vhupo made everything so easy.
I did three tours with Vhupo: the CoHK, Soweto Township Tour, and the Hector Pieterson and Apartheid Museum tour in one. Vusi was my tour guide and I can't praise him enough. He arrives early, knows a lot, is very polite and is a great communicator. The whole purpose of a tour is to inform tourists and travellers about what the place is about but I think Vusi has a particular generosity as I had a lot of questions. This is not to encourage intrusive questions though! 😊 I particularly enjoyed the Soweto tour. I was deeply moved when meeting Mali and Thempisa. It is a travesty that the government do not provide basic services but how the underprivileged communities come together is brilliant.
When I came back for the third tour, Bruce organised it promptly and communicated well. Vhupo is accommodating and provides a brilliant service. If you can't tell already, I highly reccommend this tour company. Thank you Vusi for showing me a little of your home! What a privilege!
