- 1957Ottawa, Canada990 contributionsExpected more in my visit!Part of our Gate 1 tour , we stopped at Nelson’s Mandela family house. The cost of this entrance is 60 rand. He moved there with his first wife Evelyn in 1940 however after their divorce in 1957, she moved out. He married Winnie in 1958, and she joined him in this Soweto home. Part of the visit, is seeing pictures of him and his wives, his bedroom, his books-library , some of his letters… I found the house small and I expected more so I was a bit disappointed.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- bengtnitramMalmö, Sweden284 contributionsVisit a part of historyA very nice and educating experience that definitely should be part of your visit in Johannesburg. Went there with an Uber from central Johannesburg and the house itself is not that big but there are plenty of things to look at and read so if you read everything available count on spending an hour, tops two hours. The gift shop is part of the ticket both and that could need an upgrade. As we arrived we were "greeted" by street sellers pushing their hats, armbands and what not. These guys are friendly and wants to make a living but you can avoid them if you're quick.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 December 2023
- Kim WindvogelJohannesburg, South Africa99 contributionsA house full of memories, a home full of historyThe Mandela House is a well maintained museum filled with a variety of things that belonged to the whole Mandela family, not just Nelson Mandela. There are pictures and letters and all sorts of documentation to view and the house has a lot of energy inside of it. I suggest taking your time to read all the things that hang on the wall and fully immerse yourself in trying to imagine what the Mandela family had to go through. This can be difficult especially if you go during a busy time as the house is quite cozy in terms of space. The house has a lot of focus on Winnie Mandela as well and I enjoyed seeing her history be recognised within the walls too.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 January 2024
- Susan KNew York City, New York1,190 contributionsFrom humble beginning rose greatnessThis was Mandela's home and now is a small museum. It has been renovated in parts and contains important clippings and items of historical significance. It is important to include a visit to the Apartheid museum either before or after visiting his home. You can still see the bullet holes on the outside bricks.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 March 2024
- ksufan88Wichita, Kansas6,795 contributionsA slice of history but not really much to see hereThis small house doesn’t take very long to walk around (even if you browse some of the memorabilia that is displayed inside). We had guide show us around both outside and inside. She was difficult to hear at times due to the conversations of other tourists and the incessant street performers right outside that were noisy distractions.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 August 2024

This is the place to be on earth. The house is located 25 min from Johannesburg and it’s worth the drive if you go there. The guides are very well informed about the history and everything is pretty self explanatory. A lot of history is associated with this house and I was moved by it. If you want to learn more about Nelson Mandela’s evolution this is a must visit

The easiest way to get to Soweto is to take the 2 hour extension tour on the big red hop on/hop off bus. A guide who lives in Soweto gives an interactive commentary on the bus as he points out various landmarks. The final stop is the tiny house where Nelson Mandela lived at the time of his arrest. It is probably of minimal interest to non- South Africans, but your entrance fee contributes to the upkeep of his memory.

It was my first visit to South Africa and I was so keen to visit Soweto and Mandela House. A group of us went on a Saturday morning. Our tour guide Ms Precious led us through the exterior and interior of the house and gave a great history lesson about Mandela and his tlme in the home with his family. I kept thing “if only these walls could talk”. It was nice just soaking in the atmosphere of the house and the small garden outside. It’s a small house but it is brimming with history including many artifacts and his personal belongings such as his boots. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. Just take care when you arrive in the area of the house as there will be lots of folks greeting you with a begging story. Be aware of your surroundings as you make your way inside the property.

The Mandela house has been turned into an attraction/museum and they did a pretty good job of showing how he lived. There is lots of memorabilia around and the property is very nicely maintained.
We were there in the morning and there weren't that many people around. It was quiet, respectful, and enjoyable.
The immediate neighborhood felt pretty safe to walk around in too. Just down the street, we bought a beer and shopped a little; there were some nice shops!
It's a pretty quick visit to go through the house and, my opinion, worth the time for sure.

We saw this house during a tour of Soweto and we were so glad we stopped. It was an honor to visit a house that had been the residence of such an important global figure. A visit here doesn't last long as the house isn't large but there are displays and information in each of the rooms. Guides are also available for hire on site.

I was nearly put off about some of the reviews and parking . So glad we went in our rental car. using a gps - we were guided right to the door , a young man pointed out a parking spot one door down on the footpath - we paid 20 Rand and off we went - I was certainly not intimidated as others have said on TA or felt like protection . Its a small price for goodness sake there are people everywhere , we shopped a bit and the house is just inspiring !! GO early to beat the crowds
