- Sayithowitis2 contributionsRovos Rail disappointingJourney 3-6 October 2022 Cape Town to Pretoria. Much like earlier reviews of Rovos Rail, Mr Vos replied to my email with a long explanation of what went wrong with our trip. It seems our travel agent was well informed and notice of delays should have been passed onto us. We were informed we would be on the train for another night but not the reason why. I’d seen a newspaper article in early 2022 which stated that another luxury train journey was having difficulties with the rails and overhead cables. We asked our travel agent about this and was reassured that all was ok with Rovos Rail. I feel that travellers should know the full picture before booking Rovos Rail. So who should be responsible for that? Mr Vos's response to my email reminds me of the pan coating ‘Teflon…nothing sticks’! In Mr Vos’s reply, I felt there were some inaccuracies between what the log and what the train manager conveyed. My concerns are: To reach our final destination, some 68 kms away, we had to dismount the carriage on makedo steps and walk over uneven tracks to get onto a coach. Two of our party had mobility difficulties. Mr Vos said ‘Regrettably there is no proper platform at Fochville so our own stairs needed to be used down onto ground level. Although less than ideal…….’ What about Health and Safety? We were stationary for long periods. The track is never very far from a main road and passengers would be defenseless in the event of an attack. If you are thinking of taking the Rovos trip I hope this review gives you a clearer insight of what to expect. We were very disappointed. Date of experience: 03 October 2022Dear @ E5339FX Thank you for your review. To reiterate what we send our private response to you and on Trust Pilot, we had no choice but to disembark guests in Fochville due to cable theft, a broken-down train and a protest. Even though the disembarkation in Fochville is not ideal, we stand by our decision as the train only arrived into Meyerton (where passengers were scheduled to disembark at 10h00) at 16h12 that afternoon which meant a very late arrival with some guests missing flights. We could not guarantee arrival into Meyerton as authorities could not confirm the time it would take for the broken down train ahead of us to be cleared and nor could we guarantee that the protest would remain civil. We once again apologise for your disappointment. Thank you for travelling with us. - Citizen CamembertWadhurst, United Kingdom287 contributionsCertainly NOT the most luxurious railway in the world!Just got off what can only be described as the farce that is Rovos Rail. Given the astronomic cost of a passage on ‘the most luxurious railway in the world’, it was an enormous disappointment to us and it seems most of our fellow passengers. While the accommodations are passable, the food is not. It has the feel of a second rate airline business class offering (only with very minimal choice) and the portions are frankly insulting in size. One starter we had could have fitted comfortably on a small cheese cracker! Operationally it’s a bit of joke too. The constant stopping and starting makes for little comfort and explains the reason why it takes 3 days to get from Pretoria to Durban. Our locomotive broke down for a whole day. Except for the last couple of hours, the scenery is pretty uninspiring with shanties being the most common sight. Communication with passengers about ‘operational delays’ was very poor and we never quite knew what we were doing. One day we spent three hours n a coach because they were unable to offer us a serviceable train. The staff, while trying very hard to please us, we’re very inexperienced and seemed to be struggling, unable to even open a bottle of wine. The final insult was a chaotic arrival in Durban on to a dark platform and total chaos. We were so looking forward to this trip and had such high expectations which were not even partially met.Dear @ Smatty68 Thank you for your review. Although I have studied the rooming list carefully, I can't identify you by your Trip Advisor handle so don't know what suite you travelled in. It does seem, however, that most of our British guests opted to stay in our Pullman suites which are our smallest accommodations on board - 7sqm with the option of a twin or double bed configuration and an en-suite bathroom. Reading through the comment sheets, from 36 out of the 40 passengers on board, and looking through the journey's menus, I find your comment about the food out of kilter with the rest of the feedback. Overall, the food received 16 Excellent, 18 Good, 2 Average with no Fair or Poor ratings given. Guest comments include “excellent” and “quality and quantity excellent”. We have in the past received feedback that our portions are too large which is why we serve light starters. Your comment about there being minimal choice is inaccurate as we have vegetarian, pescatarian and vegan options available and also communicate in our pre-departure announcements as well as on board that our kitchen team is happy to prepare alternatives. Regarding the operational running of the trip. Speed restrictions were implemented by Transnet (national railway authority) on the first day of the journey which slowed progress down considerably. In addition, the locomotives which were issued to us were faulty and rather than wait on authorities to repair their equipment, we arranged for a bus to transfer guests from Newcastle to the Nambiti Game Reserve for the scheduled game drive (transfer time was 1hr20). We then transferred guests to Spionkop for the scheduled battlefields tour (transfer was less than an hour). Guests met the train in Ladysmith at 19h10 that evening and dinner was served on board at 20h00. The following morning (day three of the trip), guests left for the scheduled visit to Ardmore Ceramics at 10h08 which was after breakfast and on time. Daphne, the train manager, was advised by authorities at 16h50 on Sunday (the last day of the trip) that the points leading onto the main platform in Durban Station were faulty and that we would be taken to platform 10. We had no control over this disruption and I do believe our staff performed well on a platform unfamiliar to them as there have been no other negative comments received. Although we appreciate that the train operations did not run as smoothly as we would like, the general consensus is that the hospitality on board was good and that the three excursions were enjoyed. I would however like to apologise for any disappointment and thank you for travelling with us. - Per SKristiansand, Norway40 contributionsStill good, but challenging mostly due to circumstances beyond Rovos control. This was our second trip with Rovos from Cape Town to Pretoria, now 3 nights on the train compared to 2 last time. And we needed 3! Load shedding and other non programmed delays made it difficult to do it even with 3 nights on board! In stead of arriving Pretoria at 1120 on the last day, we arrived (by bus) at Rovos station at 1900 hrs.!! Not a problem for us as we were staying with friends, but others had bigger issues! And where was Plan B that day? We raised our concern with Mr. Vos personally and he responded immediately by giving reasons for such delays. Our Plan B under such difficult circumstances would be always to have 2 buses driving towards the train from Pretoria on the last day of the journes. In "good" days the buses could meet the train in Meyerton. In "bad" days they could meet the train much further away from Pretoria, still allowing all passengers to reach Rovos station in time for their next destination. The cost of such an emergency service is nothing compared to the price we pay to enjoy The Pride of Africa, the worlds most luxurious tran. But, the facilities, the service and food and wine are still excellent!Dear @ pers2013 Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for your positive feedback. We appreciate your understanding with the current challenges we are experiencing within South Africa and empathise with any frustration and disappointment. - SassySistaJohannesburg, South Africa225 contributionsPick your route wisely.. and then relax and enjoy the adventure!Certainly an experience of a lifetime! As with all the previous reviews, the train worked on Africa time and we appreciated the massive effort from everyone on board to make it as enjoyable as possible. This trip is for the adventurous and if you’d rather play it safe then perhaps reconsider. I will say however, I do not recommend the Cape to Pretoria route. I would much rather opt for one of the more scenic routes (to Vic Falls) as unfortunately, totally out of Rovos Rails control, the South African railway system is a dilapidated mess and routes you through some of the ugliest parts of this country. So be warned, you will romanced by the train but sadly the scenery will leave you unimpressed. That’s being said, if the train was stationary in the middle of the Karoo it would still garner many visitors and bucketlisters as it is absolutely INCREDIBLE in terms of the service, food offering and wine selection.Dear @ SassySista Thank you for your lovely and honest feedback; it is much appreciated! And thank you too for your understanding of the challenges we are currently facing within South Africa. I have already circulated your kind comments amongst the staff as I know how much they value reviews such as yours. Thank you for travelling with us. - Tricia W50 contributionsDUMPED IN JOHANNESBURGAs a couple in our seventies we joined Rovos rail at Victoria Falls bound for PRETORIA, in February. Our journey came to an abrupt end in Messina because between the South African railway system being in a dilapidated mess and the adverse weather, we were not able to continue with our luxury train journey. Consequently we were loaded on to a bus with 3 other couples and an American group, with barely enough snacks etc, for an 8 hour journey to JOHANNESBURG. We were dropped at a Joburg hotel, at 10pm where the surrounding area was pitch black because of load shedding. South Africa is suffering with the lack of tourists because of politics, safety, and load shedding issues. The Americans who were staying at this hotel were looked after, we were abandoned and never made it to Pretoria!! The kind hotel receptionist called Uber for us and we took a taxi to our hotel. The food and service for the two days on the train were excellent, but in the event of track disruption (not uncommon in South Africa) Rovos totally neglected us, have taken no responsibility and shown no remorse. Do not book a journey with them as a couple because your mental health, well being and safety are totally compromised and not what you expect when you have paid for a luxury rail journey.Dear @ globalbrit Thank you for your review. As already explained to both your international and local agent, the railway line was closed as it needed to be inspected for storm damage. There had been unusual and heavy rainfall in the area with washaways being reported which activated Transnet’s (national railway authority) protocol. To accuse us of taking no responsibility and showing no remorse does not sit right with me. Train management on board, together with our ground operations team, worked through the night to arrange transfer vehicles and to ensure that all guests were well informed and taken care of. You requested a private transfer and even though many calls were made to your local agent and also to private transfer companies nothing could be arranged or found. Arrangements were then made to transfer you with the American group. The bus driver was meant to take you to your hotel (this was discussed and confirmed) so we were only notified the following morning that an Uber was arranged for you. We apologise that you felt “dumped” but assure you that we were in contact with the American group leader and the bus driver during the course of the transfer so knew where the bus was at all times and also knew when arrival was at the first hotel. We were disappointed when your journey had to be terminated due to heavy rainfall. Rather than leave our guests on board and "hope for the best", we made the best arrangements we could at the time. We standby our decision to transfer guests from the border as the train only managed to depart Musina 36 hours later. We sincerely apologise for any disappointment. - MisterBLeicestershire, United Kingdom33 contributionsLuxury train dependent on an unreliable rail network.A luxury train with excellent staff. But, subject to the vagaries of the South African rail network. Our train from Pretoria to Durban in March was delayed 7 hours due to power failures and broken down trains ahead of us on the line. Our tour schedule went badly awry as a result. On the same day, apparently, the Cape Town to Pretoria train was running 24 hours late. On board staff say these problems are common. So, do your research thoroughly, don't rely on what your travel agent might tell you about punctuality.......and don't expect to be on time.Dear @ Tommo4210 Thank you for taking the time to leave a review; it is much appreciated. The journey you travelled certainly experienced operational challenges which were mostly due to heavy rainfall resulting in railway infrastructure failures i.e. signals not working. Your comment about a Cape Town journey running 24 hours late is inaccurate and bit reckless as there was no Cape Town trip operating that weekend. As mentioned, we are under pressure on South Africa’s railway network, something we are being as transparent about as possible, but misinformation is not helpful and I will certainly follow up my side. Thank you for your kind feedback about the staff - they really are super stars. Thank you too for travelling with us. - Marion SMilton Keynes, United Kingdom20 contributionsShame about the lost dayThe train itself is great. The coaches were lovely, clean and well stocked with all sorts of goodies. The shared spaces such as the lounge and dining car were very comfortable and the food was amazing. All the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The problem is not Rovos Rail itself but the rail system it runs on, which is very unreliable. There are frequent power cuts which cause the train to stop. On our journey we had a delay of 9 hours, stuck in a cutting for all that time while the electricity cables were mended and stuck trains removed from the line. This delay had a knock on effect for our weekend trip. So if you book Rovos Rail be prepared to be stuffed with food and have very friendly service but also be prepared for delays and stoppages which may effect your whole tripDear @ Mallow106 Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. - edwardg186368Shrewsbury, United Kingdom53 contributionsTrip from bygone era, brilliantI have rated this four stars instead of five purely because I think we picked the wrong cabin. When we went for the Pullman, when I think the very least you should go for is the deluxe, the Pullman cabin is quite small, that’s just the negative side of it, the pluses far outweighed it, brilliant service really good food and tremendous staff . They are really well trained and seem to enjoy their jobs. The wines were fantastic. All in all a trip to remember.Dear @ edwardg186368 Thank you for your lovely review. - Kerry AScottsdale, Arizona286 contributionstravel by trainThis was our first time traveling by rail and we loved it. Food was amazing, service was top notch, and everything was extremely well done. We had a very small room (berth) which we warned about, but it was fine so don't let that stop you from trying something new. We were with a largish group of people (25) so I don't know if this was something the tour group did or if is standard, but everything was gratis: drinks, food, snacks, everything. We had zero issues.Dear @ livingthedream30 Welcome to train travel! We hope you are fortunate enough to experience many trains across the world. Our rates are fully inclusive as we did not want to have guests signing bill after bill on board and fussing with an account. The aim is a complete detachment and detox from reality! - Valerossi23 contributionsDisappointedWe travelled on the Rovis Rail train from Johannesburg to Capetown 3rd week of April 2023. My wife was really looking forward to our 4 days and 3 nights on this luxurious , old world ambiance train. The decor lived up to it's advertising. My wife is dairy intolerent and this was explained at the time of booking and we were assured that this would be no problem . When we boarded the train ,the chef visited our suite and again assured my wife that she would not have any issues with her meals. Alas for the duration of our time aboard no arrangements had been made for her diet. Everything seemed to contain dairy products in one shape or another . Even an alternative milk was very difficult to get from our servers and on a couple of occasions even this was unavailable. My advise is if you have any dietary concerns avoid this train and spend your money on The Ghan or The Rocky Mountaineer both of which we have travelled on and been totally satisfiedDear @Valerossi2, Thank you for your letter of 12 June 2023 and your comments regarding your journey with us. Thank you too for your kind words about the pre journey welcome and tour of our private station. We received 24 comment sheets from the 24 suites occupied on this journey and I note a food score of 18 “excellent” and 6 “good” with no “average”, “fair” or “poor” scores. I’ve spoken to our chefs that were on board and they ensured alternative meals for dairy products were available on board. There was also Almond, Soya, and Lactose free milk available as on all our journeys. However, upon investigation, we realise that we had a fair amount of new staff in the dining car and due to the large number of dietaries on the trip, this unfortunately led them to being confused and overwhelmed. We apologise that this ultimately led to a dining service failure on our end. We strive to provide excellent service and delicious food, and we are disappointed that we fell short in your case. We do appreciate you making us aware of this, we have scheduled further training with our new staff members to prevent this in future. Again, please accept my apologies for the dietary misfires of the trip and thank you for travelling with us. We travelled on the Rovos train in Nov 2023, 12 nights from Pretoria to Vic Falls, via Mozambique and eSwatini
It is interesting reading reviews here, how opinion splits between very good and very bad. The replies by the Rovos employee certainly do not address the issues raised by many travellers, and are in my opinion, counter productive
We liked the trip, though it was not without problems, but this is Africa, and Rovos is sending trains, luxury trains at that, to places that no other passenger trains go. This is to trains, what "expedition cruises" are to ships.
This trip had a different stop each day and activities from game drives to Great Zimbabwe, Maputo to Rhodes Grave. Most were excellent, a few were not so good, but they have to appeal to all tastes
Yes we got held up by cable thefts on the track, but the train could make it up by travelling through the night. Travelling through the nights means you cannot sleep well, but "this is Africa"
Service and food in the restaurant were generally good, downside was there were not enough tables for two, and to get a table for two, everyone ended up getting to the restaurant car 30 minutes early. Not what one wants
tips were strange, Rovos suggested an amount for the kitty, then the tour guide on board said he and the bus driver had to be paid separately - looked fishy to me. I did not think a lot about the quality of this tour guide, but others liked him
This form of travel is not cheap for the traveller, but is clearly expensive to put on for Rovus. There were 38 passengers, and the train was 2 engines plus (I think) 13 carriages for passengers, lounges, restaurant, crew - that is a lot of expense.
Overall we were more than happy with the value for money, and will book again. You are a traveller here, not a tourist, which is exactly what we wanted. I accept that there is the rough and the smooth. But if you cannot take the rough, then you should not book Rovos..
Strange thing though , I have contacted Rovus twice last week with some questions on another trip, but nobody has bothered to reply, so I may not travel again

As part of our 17 day “5 Star African Safari & Luxury Rail” tour, we were privileged to experience our first (definitely not our last) luxury train journey.
From the greeting at the Rovos Rail headquarters, the tour of the workshops conducted by Rohan Vos (the owner and founder) and the beautiful presentation of the train and our Deluxe suite, we were set for an amazing 3 night journey from Pretoria to Cape Town.
Part of this experience was the dress code “for Rovos Rail journey. Days on board are smart casual: neat, conventional yet relatively informal in style combining casual and formal clothing pieces whilst evening attire is more formal: for gentlemen, a jacket and tie is a minimum requirement, while for ladies a cocktail/evening dress is suggested”. This was reinforced by Rohan at his pre-departure briefing.
We had travelled a long way from Australia and my wife and I (and our friends) had packed 3 outfits each, which we had pressed by the staff on arrival on the train.
Imagine our disbelief when we discover that at least 20% of the guests did not abide by this dress code. Some men wearing jackets only and couples dressed in their day wear (jeans and t-shirts/shirts) and did not bother to get changed for dinner.
The train manager did not take any action, except to ask a young lady to change out of her orange active wear during a lunch service. Our guess was that he did not want to offend anyone, but it ruined the whole experience for us.
The food and service was mainly good, except the final night when I was served raw scallops as an entree and the steak was barely edible. All the restaurant and bar staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. The room service staff were superb and eager to assist us with laundry and ironing.
This train is not quiet and we found it difficult to sleep when the train was moving through the night due to excessive noise and screeching. Lucky the train had a few unscheduled stops (over 5 hours to replace an engine) and we were able to get some sleep.
Overall a great journey and hopefully one day we will be back to undertake one of the other rail options.

We took 2 trips, from Cape Town, Pretoria and to Victoria Falls.
The train itself was amazing with wonderful facilities, both in our rooms and the dining and lounge areas.
The staff were exceptional, with nothing too much bother and our rooms always kept clean and tidy.
We loved being on a train but you need good balance to stay on your feet as you walk along the train while it is travelling. The track was of a barely average condition which the train company has no control of.
The meals were not to our taste. Breakfast was always wonderful but the lunch and dinner menus were not. They were four course meals taking up to 3 hours to finish. We prefer our meat well done and with vegetables or salads. It was very much leaning toward cordon bleu. We asked for a plate of sandwiches one night and the chef was very helpful in providing that before the main meals went out. We do not drink alcohol so that part of the experience was lost on us.
The whole thing was a great experience with the border crossing being a highlight. The staff took care of everything.
We love train travel and would recommend Rovos Rail to travel buffs. It is a true experience with amazing facilities and service.

The whole thing was a great experience with the border crossing being a highlight. The staff took care of everything.
We love train travel and would recommend Rovos Rail to travel buffs. It is a true experience with amazing facilities and service.

We went on the Rovos Rail train a month ago,Sept 2023.From Pretoria to Cape Town.We had a open tour visit with the owner himself where those trains are restored before they become the attraction of those trips!
He s a real gentleman Mr Rohan Vos.
We were in Africa for 25 nights, and we stayed three nights on the Rovos Rail which was really nice. That train is just amazing! Loved the old wood finish style of the train, bars, dining rooms, etc etc,,The food was also alway really good, and the staff are all just so friendly and very very nice!
As for the scenery, well if you expect to see animals, you will not see any at all,but going to Africa means that you will do Safaris else where like we did.
But still the scenery was more of open fields, small town views going down which some are very sad and disturbing to see, because they are so poor and there homes conditions are just unreal, with those kids,,etc you have to see to understand what i mean!
Prepare yourself to have many many many unexpected stops, and waiting before moving again, which is not Rovos Rail fault, they need to have permission to keep going at many points in the journey, though we did not expected that !
Three nights was good, and i would nt have stayed another day, because it is very noisy at night and to be honest I did not sleep much in three days.
The train makes a lot of noises on those many stops, and it is very unstable, well it s an old style train.
It was still a real nice experience overall,,so go for it !
All the best

Service and old style glamour are what spring to mind. Food must have a mention as it’s my favourite thing. It’s balanced on the plate, they make a huge effort, paired with great wine. The glassware is a delight to drink from! The only let down at the table Are the white side/ bread plates (yes I’m fussy!) Service is excellent -it’s a well oiled machine! Maybe a trained cocktail bar person would be an asset? Cabins are luxurious (obviously they are compact!) and have everything you need and more.. And if it doesn’t just ask! Do not hesitate to take your black tie/full evening dress. It’s a great excuse to dress up-you won’t regret it! it’s a shame they have plastic hangers in the wardrobe. There is a laundry and a fast pressing service. It’s an elegant way to travel. Rohan Voss is passionate and it shows. His staff share his enthusiasm highly recommend!

The quality of the actual train - food, drinks service exceptional. However the actual running stock I.e diesels that pull the train - worse than poor, we never saw a steam train and certainly a steam train neither took us out of Cape Town or took us into Pretoria which was disappointing. Apparently this is a regular occurrence and Rovos are less than honest when it comes to advertising.

Dear Alison
Thank you for your review and your comments about the train, food, drinks, and staff. Our train staff really are wonderful and it's always a good feeling when they are recognised.
Use of steam has become increasingly difficult over the years as more and more water and coaling facilities have been scrapped. As result, we do not haul our trains by steam (or advertise it as such). Diesel or electric locomotives are used while steam is used in and around the area of Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria only. We also have a special annual event called The Heidelberg Great Train Race and this is the only occasion where our train is hauled by steam outside of Pretoria. I’m sorry you didn’t manage see “Shaun” or “Tiffany”, our steam locos in action at our Private Station in Capital Park.
Thank you for travelling with us and hope to welcome you on board again in the not-too-distant future.

Day 1 From the Cape Town Rovos base we had a 3 hour coach journey (we were told 2 hours) had coke and a packet of crisps onboard. Boarded train at some disused station near impoverished town. Cabins and evening meal perfect. Train stationary overnight.
Day 2 and 3 we had superb food and excellent service. Overnight none of our group (23) slept there was constant screeching from the wheels and at least 10 sharp stops (seemed as if we had hit something) during the night.
Day 4 As with the whole trip we spent many hours stationary, the lounge car was so bouncy when moving (like severe turbulence in an aircraft) we were unable to drink a cup of tea without it spilling. Observation car was fine. Disembarkation was delayed by hours and we had to step off the train and cross tracks to another bus (no station at all this time) quite a challenge for the less mobile in our party. 2 of our party were nearly left behind as no proper announcement had been made.
At the last minute the Russian passsengers' luggage was offloaded from the bus, then after approx one and a half hours drive the Russians were dropped off at their central Johannesburg hotel. The rest of us continued for another hour or more passing our own hotel district to the official Rovos Rail terminal in Pretoria where we were given refreshments and a tour of the works. Then we boarded our own bus to our hotel, in all 4 hours from leaving the train to arriving in our hotel which meant that our planed afternoon excursion had to be cancelled.
Be warned this is a luxury train, but not a luxury journey and our experience was far from unique (a friend travelled last year). We certainly did not 'get what we paid for'. Rovos is full of excuses, but until they have sorted out their problems they must be more honest with customers about the experience and charge accordingly.

Dear Sue C
Thank you for your review and for your kind words regarding the suites, the food, and the service on board.
We do apologise for the bus transfers on this journey, we were indeed affected by Mother Nature herself due to a level-9 storm hitting the Western Cape. I have read through your comment sheet and thank you too for your kind words regarding the “enormous efforts that must have been made to enable us to travel.” Indeed, logistical somersaults were being performed behind-the-scenes to get the train moving, thank you for your gracious observation.
On the final day, once we arrived at Kookrus for disembarkation, we realised that one of our transfers had not arrived despite it being confirmed earlier during the morning. Unfortunately, we had no other choice but to group passengers together to ensure all arrive safely at their destination. We are of course disappointed and sincerely wish to apologise for the disruption and for any inconvenience caused.
We hope we can welcome you on board again one day so that we can redeem ourselves.

We went on the Rovos Rail "Trail of Two Oceans" trip from Lobito, Angola to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, via the DRC (Congo) and Zambia this past August, and it was a spectacular trip of a lifetime, far exceeding expectations. I don't say this lightly as we have visited well over 100 countries and been on many adventure trips. The train is a beautifully restored set of carriages that transport you back 100 years to the 1920's. Dining is elegant with 4 course meals (lunch and dinner) with wine parings (from an extensive wine list); the bars are well-stocked, always open and drinks are included. There is also room service (drinks and food) as needed. Our compartment was beautifully paneled in mahogany and teak, with a queen+ sized bed, en suite toilet, sink and shower, cupboards and drawers, plenty space for luggage storage, and laundry is included; on boarding the train we found a bucket of champagne in our compartment (which could be replenished as needed). Champagne and other drinks were served on returning to the train after every excursion. Indeed, the Rovos train experience in general is unmatched by other train trips anywhere. Several passengers had been on multiple other Rovos trips, and for one couple this was their 10th trip. The trip traverses routes that would be challenging to visit otherwise. This trip traverses the heart of Africa, so it is indeed an adventure. The tracks are not in the best of condition, so the speed is slow and there are unexpected stops and delays (of course such things happen often in the US on Amtrak). In consequence the ride can sometimes be bumpy (after all these are 1920s carriages). There are actually engineers on the train to not only fix things on the train itself but the tracks as well; every possible eventuality was pre-anticipated and solved. Everything on the trip was efficient and well-organized, considering this is Africa. The staff was were wonderful, always helpful, and all of the tricky border formalities were taken care of out of sight. We felt completely safe throughout the trip. Midway on the trip we flew by private jet for a 2 night bush camp stay in South Luangwa NP, Zambia, Our stay at Bilimungwe Camp was not to be missed. This is one of the best safari bush camps we have ever visited (and we have been to dozens over the years). Of course there many other excursions en route as well. The trip was full of unexpected surprises which was special e.g. on arrival at Dar es Salaam, we were greeted by a band playing on the platform. I cannot recommend Rovos enough, and we are signing up for another trip.

Arriving at Rovos Rail own Station in Pretoria you are greeted at the entrance by the reception staff, your bags are taken off to be loaded on to the train.
The station takes you back to the good old days of luxury stream travel, as you sip your chilled sparkling wine.
Shortly before boarding Mr Rovos (Rohan Vos) gives you a personally guided tour of the station, the workshops and how he started Rovos rail, which is very interesting.
Boarding the train you are show to your personal suite which is wonderful with great attention to detail. There are 4 levels of suite on this route we choose the Deluxe suite, The suites come with all the mod-cons including A/C. There was a good sized shower in the bathroom.
Lunch was low key in terms of dress code, but the dinning carriages were superb. The food was of the finest quality along with the South African wines.
Dinner was more formal, jacket and ties for gents, again excellent food and service.
The route from Pretoria to Cape Town makes several stops, unfortunately due to track & cable theft along the line this impacted severely on the route meaning these were cancelled, this was a great disappointment, additionally we were informed that due to bad weather days before part of the track had been washed away, which meant the last part of our journey would be by coach, again a great disappointment.
I understand you cannot control the weather but surely the SA tourist board should go something to stop the line thefts as this appears be be a continued occurrence, disrupting the enjoyment of many who choose to spend a great deal of money to travel in the bygone years of rail travel.
A Wonderful adventure never the less.

Our trip on the Rovos Rail really was a dream
We boarded a train that took us back
In times long ago once seen
There was luxury and quality meals with service hard to beat
But the biggest surprise was the wonderful friends we’d get to meet
The staff were fantastic
Professional, smiley and most kind
Treated like kings and queens in a time on rewind
Seriously put this on your bucket list if not already there. You won’t be disappointed

Our tour operator gave us about 10% back of the total cost of our 2 week journey, 4 nights being with Rovos Rail. I do not know if the compensation came from Rovos Rail or from our tour operator. I know that Rovos said they would pay for the bus back to Victoria Falls (the one that broke down and they had to get another), and our hotel room in Victoria Falls--the least they could do. No individuals should be booking this train and neither should tour operators. I just received a brochure that advertises a trip next year with 3 nights on Rovos Rail!

I have my evening wear sorted but what is the best clothing to pack for day wear please? I'll be going in October/November, which I believe is spring in SA? Any advice on what to pack will be gratefully received as I'm in SA for 3 weeks and am trying to pack light, but appropriately! Thank you.

Has the February 2020 change to an earlier scheduled departure from Pretoria (morning not afternoon) allowed the trains to stop overnight or are they still having to roll through night to stay on schedule

Dear @janetmac
Thank you for your question.
Should the train need to travel overnight to either make up time or stay on schedule then it will.
We cannot guarantee overnight stops, not with all the current infrastructure upgrades being implemented by Siemens and Transnet (national railway authority) which are causing the delays.
Thank you

Thank you for your message.
The best person to advise on accommodation in Lobito is the coordinator of the journey, Alicia. I have not been to Angola so am unable to assist.
Please could I ask you to mail me so that I can loop you into a conversation with Alicia.
