We visited Newlands for an England v South Africa match and had a fantastic afternoon... and the view was just incredible!
Watching England at Newlands has been on my 'bucket list' for years so last year, we booked tickets and had a mini break in Claremont (20mins walk from the ground). We decided to upgrade to a shared box and despite the facilities being basic, thought the extra was money well spent for the meal, view and extra protection from the searing heat (it was 33°).
We arrived as early as we could and were only the 3rd group in the box which holds around 20, decided where to sit (I seem to recall we could sit anywhere so chose the frow) and went inside to get a drink. All drinks (alcoholic and non) were included as was a 3 course meal of buffet style hams, samosa style snacks (which were amazing), cheese, fruits etc, a choice of 2 or 3 full on hot meals and lovely chocolate cake. Although seating inside the box was limited, there was plenty outside.
As mentioned, the facilities are quite basic and the toilets are on alternate levels, so we had to go up a level to use the toilets, but everything was clean (the toilets were cleaned after each use) and tidy and the staff were excellent.
The game we watched was very close, and the atmosphere in the ground and amongst our fellow fans - both Brits and South Africans - was superb. It ran over time and watching the sun set over the extraordinarily beautiful view was amazing. Definitely worth a visit, and if you can afford to, upgrade to a box for something a little special without losing the atmosphere.

Went to watch the England vs South Africa game yesterday. What a brilliant experience we had! It started well, right from the off. We are over from the UK and staying in Silvermine, so drove to Newlands fairly early in case traffic was bad, but it turned out not to be. We were advised on the website we could park at the Groote Schuur High School sports field, which we did, for just 50R. Well done to them for their entrepreneurship! Both sides played very well and although my home side didn’t win, their defensive fielding was outstanding! South Africa’s batsmen Bavuma & De Cock did a sterling job for SA’s 7 wicket victory. Well done to them; a deserved win. The whole atmosphere, facilities and the outstanding service by all of the grounds staff made our day the absolute pleasure it was. Special credit must go to the facilities and cleaning staff. We sat in Railway Stand, Block W, which gave us a couple of hours in the glorious sunshine, then we were most grateful of the shade of the scoreboard...in the heat of the afternoon. The only thing we felt could be improved upon was most irritating, constant noise and interruptions by the vendor sellers. Sure, everyone likes to have drinks and snacks on hand but it was incessant and far too disruptive, obstructing view and even missing wickets! However, overall, a brilliant day and we’ll look forward to our next visit, and would definitely recommend!

What an amazing experience to be able to watch a game in this ground. I am not a cricket fan by any means but I would go again. The ground it's self is a wow! Great food stalls, there are people who will come to your seat and sell you water/soft drinks or ice creams. Bought tickets in UK but they were sent from the ground it self, they even called to make sure we had received them

Went to watch a local game rather than an international so obviously you don’t get the facilities you would with a bigger game - catering was so basic. We had been told in the phone the game was catered so expected something better than what was on offer.
However game was good and always lovely to visit this iconic venue - hubby has even played here on tour.

I can't understand why this place gets such great reviews. Is it because it is in the shadow of the back end of Table Mountain, or is it because England won? There is only one large scoreboard, of which the view is obscured from one of the main stands by the jutting-out roof of another stand. The one and only screemn is poor at showing replays. If you are undercover in a main stand you are surrounded by concrete so you can only hear what is going on in your own stand (apparently Billy the Barmy Army trumpeter was in the ground but we couldn't hear him!) . Access to our part of the ground was through a dirty, unpleasant tunnel which flooded on the final day. Catering is awful unless you like burgers, biltong, borewoers and Castle lager - literally the only alcohol available unless you are in a hospitality box, even though you are only a few miles away from some of the best wineries in the world! After quite some searching in the dingy, characterless concrete tunnels beneath the stands we found two stalls selling Coke, one selling Indian food and one other selling vegetarian - no vegan at all.

I’d wanted to watch cricket at Newlands for a long time..so being able to watch England play South Africa in an ODI was ideal. The sun shone throughout, the view of Table Mountain was well, perfect. The atmosphere was great. Really friendly and welcoming,Yes it would have been nice if England had won, but that didn’t matter in terms of it being a memorable day out.
I used Uber to get there and back. Follow the driver’s instructions for the pick-up point after the game.
Even if you’re not a cricket fan, this is a place for a great day out. If you are, why haven’t you been already!?

Always wanted to visit to watch South Africa play England - got there this time and we won! It is a wonderful old stadium which is in the process of being updated/enlarged. With a backdrop of the Table Mountain Range makes it so iconic. The ice cream seller in our stand had being doing the same job for 50 years - well done! Go if you get the chance!

Happened to be passing in the hope of getting a sneak peep of the inside of this famous ground though a gap in the hoardings.
However, with a combination of inquisitiveness & politeness was offered, together with my wife and two friends, a full tour of the stadium by their head of hospitality! ( think her name was Shami but forgive me if I've got that wrong) ..suffice to say she was delightful.
What a fabulous place ..would love to watch a 5 day Test Match here!
The backdrop is stunning.

2 years ago went to the MCG Boxing Day test match in Australia, this being 1st on my bucket list. The Table Mountain test match at Newlands was 2nd on my bucket list, but maybe after today, it should have been top. Surely nothing beats enjoying the cricket whilst looking at the wonderful table mountain. In terms of the facilities, plenty of legroom around your seat, very clean toilets due to hard working attendants, and very reasonable beer prices. Was also impressed at the speed you got through security. Final word of recognition is for the hard working staff walking around the ground selling bottle water and ice cream, etc. Back there tomorrow. Hoping the same as today, and in particular a fine English performance

Am I correct in thinking the North Stand is the best place to sit to see Table Mountain whilst watching the cricket. Going with my wife and she definitely doesn’t want to sit on the grass or be exposed to the sun all match. Thanks

We are England fans going to CPT for a holiday and want to take our 8 month old daughter to the game. Does anyone know where the best stand to take her will be out of the sun etc. We would like to go on Oaks but don’t know if they allow you to rent Umbrellas in side. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

We are in Cape Town at the beginning of February 2020 and would like to go to the 50 over ODI. Can anyone recommend to get tickets beforehand or just turn up on the day bearing in mind England are now World Champs. I've tried both Newlands and the hotel I'm booked into but neither have replied.

A mate purchased ours online as indicated above. It was easy enough. Get the seats facing the mountain, it's a spectacular backdrop
