- Nina CSurrey, United Kingdom145 contributionsGorgeous gardensWe took a taxi from our hotel to these gardens and spent 4 hours there. They are stunning, and some of the boundaries are open and blend into the foothills of Table Mountain. We were blessed with beautiful weather and mid-October was an excellent time of year to visit. We ended up taking hundreds of photos. There are good restaurants and a nice souvenir shop too.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 January 2024
- floridaherbieMarco Island, Florida221 contributionsUnbelievable selection of plants beautifly displayed!Certainly one of the best and largest botanical gardens in the world! The incredible amount of exhibits and plants is just marvellous! We spent nearly an entire day there and I am sure we didn't see everything. A must go if you are in Cape Town.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 February 2024
- Regina Ferraz PerussiSao Paulo, SP44 contributionsAn oasis of peace and beauty in Cape Town: beautiful botanical gardenA beautiful place that cannot be missed and enjoyed. It is located at the foot of Table Mountain and is easily accessible via the Hop on Hop off bus route or by UBER (about 20 minutes from the center). It has a fantastic energy due to nature itself with the exuberance of the local flora. It is possible to go on different trails, have a picnic, celebrate birthdays or even watch shows. It is very well preserved, clean and structured, with toilets, a great restaurant and an excellent souvenir shop. An oasis of peace in Cape Town!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 February 2024
- J SEdingley, United Kingdom54 contributionsGreat day outBeautiful place to visit, much larger than we imagined. You can stroll around well made paths for several hours taking in all the wonderful plants, birds and views across Cape Town. Plenty of parking, good coffee in the cafe. Would definitely visit again as there is so much to see. Interesting walkway through the tree canopy. Lots of nice shaded places to sit and enjoy the surroundings.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 February 2024
- Susan KNew York City, New York1,224 contributionsThe most beautiful botanical garden I ever saw! There are free walking tours and recorded information about the plants. We had an excellent guide that explained the unique flora, pointed out plants used in medicine, showed us many poisonous plants that were used in darts to kill pry, and gorgeous flowering plants as well. There are over 9000 species of plants and the setting can't be more beautiful.,Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 February 2024

The gardens were beautiful and well-kept with lots of photo opportunities and benches placed around to sit and enjoy the experience. However, I would recommend wearing hiking shoes/trainers as I wore sandals and they broke due to the amount of walking!Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 1 March 2024
- Simon NLondon, United Kingdom190 contributionsIncredible gardens! You could spend a whole day at the gardens! The landscape is amazing, and throughout exploring the grounds you get breath taking views. There are maps available to help you navigate around the gardens, as well as specific walks of varying difficulty that can be undertaken and are well sign posted. We went when the weather wasn't too great, but I can imagine it being amazing to have a picnic and just relax. Definitely worth visiting if in Cape Town!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024

We must have spent 4 hours here, just walking and looking at plants and enjoying the scenic views. The cafe is quite nice and the coffee was very good. - angieArmagh, United Kingdom247 contributionsBigger than expected, if you want to do any of the bigger or steeper walks don't wear flip flops . Sensible shoes recommendedBeautiful gardens just outside the city, was disappointed to find that the entrance fee wasn't included with our city pass (even though the bus is?).. was much larger than I expected and my legs got a good workout. Be careful in the gift shop, the prices are a little odd, with the 1000 a good bit behind the 100s and on small tickets.. your credit card could be in for a shock.. though the staff did double check that we had seen the pricing correctly.. A very nice way to while away a couple of hours.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2024

These gardens are well worth visiting and allow lots of time to wander around. There are concerts in the evening, which we didn't see, but I would think they would be lovely. There are lots of places to sit and take in the beautiful views. It was highly recommended to us as a 'must do' in Cape Town and we're so pleased we went.
It's part of the Hop On Hop Off open top bus route and allow lots of time if you want to make the most of the gardens.
We hopped off the bus and decided to get an Uber back to our hotel. Please note it's quite a long way out of Cape Town so we waited for 25 minutes for the Uber. Ubers are really cheap so it wasn't expensive but the waiting time can be longer than in the city.

This was not our first visit but as usual it did not disappoint, so having visited many times this review is more tips to get the most out of your visit.
1) Kirstenbosch is on the side of Table Mountain so many paths are on a slope which could prove difficult if you’re in a wheelchair or have reduced mobility but not so bad if you’re pushing a child’s buggy.
2) There is a motorised buggy with guide that leaves on the hour from 10:00 to 15:00, it needs to be booked. Easiest way to do this is book when you buy your entrance ticket - the combined cost is under £10 (R160) per person - so excellent value when compared to the cost of visiting other national gardens around the world. It is popular and your guide will take you all over the gardens pointing out what is in flower as well as interesting plants and facts, and, of course, you can ask questions.
3) There are two entrances to Kirstenbosch, the upper entrance and car park is to the right as you drive in but the hop on hop off buses do not go up to this entrance only the main lower one. The upper entrance gives fantastic views over the gardens and the tea rooms are near this entrance.
4) If you’re not South African (we’re from the U.K.) don’t expect a British style park with blooming flower beds, there is always something in bloom at Kirstenbosch but you may have to look for it, There are garden walks/tours - join one and you’ll see so much more (these are free).
5) The tea room at the top of the gardens is excellent, fantastic food.

This was great fun as it gave us the best of both worlds. We got to see the stunning gardens which we had seen a TV programme back in the UK with Monty Don the well know gardener. He visited Capetown area and featured these beautiful gardens in his programme.
On this particular day they hosted a music concert with a local group/ DJ called Goldfish. It was a sold out concert and apparently is always a sell out. The stage set up is very clever and points out to a hilly area of wide open space where we found a comfortable place to sit down on our blankets towels etc. People come totally prepared with picnic baskets, food , wine , beers etc. Holding 1000’s of music lovers it started around 5pm and went on till around 7-15pm when everyone is kindly asked to leave as the park needs to be cleared by 8pm.
It all clears very quickly and everyone seems to know how important that is and there were no issues.
Just a little difficult finding your taxi or cat pick up and getting back onto the main road because of the amount of visitors and cars. But a great venue and the music got everyone on their feet and dancing. I can see why this is such a success as the gardens are fantastic and you can come here easily for the day and then stay on for the concert.
There is a bridge walk within the gardens and great Table Mountain views as a backdrop.

Even for non gardeners this is a must visit while in Cape Town. We both walked round - and - took the guided buggy tour. The buggy tour (R85) is great as it takes you right up to the top of the gardens and shows you the place from every angle and the guy that does it, is knowledgable; enthusiastic and mad ... and added bonus.

As a tour guide who has been taking international visitors to the gardens for the last 18 years i was disgusted to find out today that the entrance fee for international visitors has increased from about R80 to R200 . I have called upon all tour companies to delete the gardens from their itineraries and to make sure their guests are aware of this criminal increase. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

First day in South Africa, booked a family birthday meal in Moyo Restaurant in Kirstenbosch on Google for 6 people at 16:00.
Got to the venue only to be told we had to pay R200 (£10 each) each to enter the gardens to get to the Restaurant (no notice of this on Google at all).
Staff would not move on this, despite all we had time for was to have our meal before closing time. We asked it we could at least change our tickets to another day so we could at least come back to see the gardens but this was totally refused. Sadly a complete rip off.

This is one of those places that you should visit when in Cape Town.
Allocate about 2-3 hours for the gardens and stay
Pack a picnic bag, walk the gardens and the find a place to rest and soak up the environment.
There is a restaurant available serving scrumptious dishes and snacks.
The scones are delicious.
There is parking available. Not sure about public transport.
Entrance fee is rather pricey for locals.

We went in the earlier portion of the day on a Monday and it was a very enjoyable, calm experience. There were families having picnics in the grass under a shaded tree or along the bank of the stream, which was very calming. We saw TONS of the flora for the Cape Region while also getting in a good workout through walking around. There was a canopy walk which was fun to see the tree tops and many photo ops.

This is a truly amazing place that is well worth a half day visit or even longer.
Set beneath the east side of Table Mountain , the gardens seemingly go on forever, full of beautiful plants and shrubs and trees that have been well planted together. There is also an abundance of bird life that accompanied you as you walk. There are many shady benches and small paths and green spaces to picnic. And an abundance of signs to keep you informed as you stroll around.
In addition to this there is a short-ish tree canopy walkway that is very interesting and a sculpture garden with some great stone sculptures.
A really special place!

I paid a visit to this botanical garden, since it was on the route of the tour bus that goes around Cape Town. You could easily spend half a day in the botanical gardens. There are a lot of walking trails to follow throughout the gardens. There are plenty of areas to relax and have a drink or a meal. The gardens are very picturesque, with a view of the mountains of Capetown throughout the gardens, and a view of the city of Capetown in the Distance. There are many species of plants to see in the gardens, and there is a lot of color to be seen in the flowers that are found in the gardens. There are numerous signs throughout the garden directing you to locations that may be of interest within the gardens.

Hey i would like to do picnic how much is the fee for 2 adult & can i bring a wine
Written 19 December 2024
Yes you can bring your own wine and picnic basket.
Notsure of the rates. They have different rates for local , foreigner , student , pensioners.
Written 21 December 2024
I have seen large family groups in the gardens previously - there doesn't seem to be a limit as such, and of course each person pays an entrance fee. There's a lot of space available so it's a case of picking your spot and setting everything up. I cannot imagine the park objecting so long as the group respects others around, the park environment etc. Clearly there's no braii's allowed or facilities for one either.

Does one need to book tickets for Kirstenbosch if one is a member of the Botanical Society? Or can one just use one's digital membership card to gain entry?

I don't have a card but you can phone the gardens office. I am a visitor and make use of a Tuesday free entry for Pensioners.

Written 8 February 2020
Ah, good question. Sadly I don’t know if a concert ticket gives you entry. Perhaps you could call the Gardens direct.
Written 10 February 2020
I didn't see any type of lockers or area where you could store luggage. What I recall is a large gift shop, restaurant, bathrooms and the ticket counter.
I hope you can make it to the Garden.

Unfortunately we don't have facilities at Kirstenbosch to store suitcases.
