We had 3 days touring with Charlie and this was one of the most enjoyable - exploring the Maboneng Arts District and Jewel City redevelopment project. We never would have found these areas on our own - and it was an interesting exploration of previously forgotten neighborhoods that have been reclaimed and developed with an emphasis on local involvement rather than over-gentrification.

We booked direct with Local Places, so we had a version of this tour with Charlie that focused on the story of Johannesburg through immigration and food by visiting various ethnic neighborhoods, restaurants and shops.
It was a great tour - the only problem was that we ate so much (at our own cost) by the time we reached our favorite areas - Ethiopian and Portuguese, we just couldn't eat another bite!
If we had another day, we would have taken a tour we hadn't seen online of 'Charlie's favorite places' which probably would have included some of these as well.
Unlike many tourist-oriented tour companies where they point out sites with a basic explanation - Local Places presents a 'story-telling' format where you receive the 'full story' with extensive background, historical detail and its impact not just on South Africa, but also the rest of the world.
Sometimes you can be a bit overwhelmed by dates and names, but it soon becomes helpful when cross-referencing other aspects of life that the events set in motion.
As an example of what you'll experience with Local Places - my traveling companion's favorite moment in Johannesburg (he's normally not very adventurous), was the point on the tour when Charlie let us high upstairs through the commotion of a multi-level building full of Ethiopian shops, businesses and restaurants for Ethiopian coffee with cardamon - and then led us up some steps, outside an open window onto the ledge of a building overlooking the bustling street below for our most memorable view of the day. With Local Places, you have a unique and personal experience and perspective that you would never receive on a typical tour or 'hop on, hop off' bus. This is more expensive - but worth it... after all, if you're only going to visit Johannesburg once in a lifetime, you might as well have a 'tour of a lifetime'.
Highly Recommended! Thanks Charlie!

We almost didn't include Johannesburg in our itinerary - but after we received a proposed itinerary from Local Places, we were so impressed that we stayed 3 nights and would have been happy to add another day or two if we had known what a great set of tours they offered.
We booked three tours, and the Soweto full-day tour was the best of all the tours with Charlie.
Living in Puerto Rico and the USA, we had only a very general knowledge of the impact of Aparthied in South Africa. Unlike many tourist-oriented tour companies where they point out sites with a basic explanation - Local Places presents a 'story-telling' format where you receive the 'full story' with extensive background, historical detail and its impact not just on South Africa, but also the rest of the world.
It's often more like a 'master class' than a tour.
Sometimes you can be a bit overwhelmed by dates and names you are unfamiliar with (since in the USA we learned almost nothing about South African history in school) - but it soon becomes helpful when cross-referencing other aspects of life that it affected.
We arranged for private tours - so Charlie was able to shift focus or length of each location based on our feedback and questions, but I'm sure he's just as flexible with group tours.
The only regret was that this tour didn't include the museum - which requires several hours to visit - and unfortunately we left the next day.
Both Charlie and our driver were excellent and the restaurant we had lunch at (at our own cost) was one of our favorites of the entire trip.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants an indepth tour and understanding of Soweto.

While I have spent a lot of time in inner city Johannesburg in recent years this tour felt unique and involved walking in diverse areas of historical and cultural significance. Charlie is both an exceptional tour guide and eloquent storyteller with a wealth of knowledge about the history of Johannesburg. I strongly recommend this and other tours with Joburg Places.

I recently spent a few weeks in Johannesburg and had the great privilege and pleasure of participating in two walking tours that were hosted by Charlie. I absolutely loved the experience and truly enjoyed being part of a very small group walking through different neighborhoods in Johannesburg that I would otherwise not have visited by myself. I especially enjoyed all the knowledge and historical background that Charlie shared with us and the opportunity to ask questions along the way about not only the city, but also overall South African culture, history and customs. I will most certainly book more tours with LocalPlaces on my next visit and I can’t wait to start exploring Cape Town with Gerald. I felt safe and in good company at all times. Don’t miss out on this very special customized experience at a great price when in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Charlie welcomed me in downtown Joburg (very easy location to get with a UBER) on time and we've got a very pleasant 3 hours walk. Charlie knows Joburg by heart and was very king all tour round answering questions and give a very good understanding of the city. I also booked "East Town is Alive" tour and "Bristling Braamfontein" tour on the day after and I would definitely recommend them as well. Thanks Charlie and Gerald!

I had read about JoburgPlaces (Charlie Moyo) in a NYT article (36 hours in Johannesburg). After doing some additional research, I booked 2 walking tours while in Johannesburg, Atonishing Marshalltown Tour and Soweto by bus. It was a great call. I learned so much from Charlie as we walked around Joburg. My favorite was walking inside the prior Johannesburg Stock Market and then seeing where Mandela/Tambo law offices were located (across street from the shadow boxing statue of Mandela). We then met our driver for the tour to Soweto. Originally, I was going to just do the walking tour, but Charlie convinced me a visit to Joburg without visiting Soweto would miss out on the story of Apartheid South Africa; Charlie was 100% correct.

The bottom line, if you are looking for a full day of meaningful, informative and entertaining insights about South Africa and Johannesburg in particular, you owe it to yourself to reach out to Charlie and confirm a booking. I am so glad I did, a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Charlie.

Gerald was super informative on the history of J’burg and Soweto. You really felt the history come alive through his stories and the associated site visits. The tour really made us truly appreciate the city, history, and culture. I highly highly recommend.

Charlie took us on a fantastic tour of Johannesburg. As we had booked a private tour, he had the opportunity to tailor the tour to our interests (as urbanists and housing profressionals) and it was a mindblowing day full of stories and deep history.
Highly recommend! This is the perfect tour for a local, South African or tourist!

This tour was a fascinating look into the history of Joburg and South Africa. Our family of 10 did this tour in the morning and the Soweto bus tour in the afternoon. Charlie is a wealth of information and everyone could not get enough of his valuable knowledge and insight. Gerald arranged a delicious lunch of local foods in between tours. If possible I highly recommend reading Nelson Mandela's autobiography "The Long Walk to Freedom" before traveling to South Africa.
