This museum has been on the decline for many years. At this point it should simply be shuttered and its great collection should be moved to a safer location than this crime-infested and neglected neighborhood. Most of the collection is no longer on display, the building and environs are in a state of disrepair and it is only a matter of time before the collection is stolen or damaged in a fire or flood.

Beautiful building in a very poor neighborhood. Security everywhere even inside the gate. It’s free but not much is on display. We didn’t have cellphones and they didn’t have WiFi, so a worker left and found us a metered taxi. The taxis was fixed rate not metered but we were happy to get out of the Newtown neighborhood.

Unfortunately the building is in disrepair and it is located in a dangerous area in terms of crime and traffic. However, there are some beautiful collections there.

JAG is a shadow of its former self. If you read the Wikipedia article on JAG, and compare that with current reality, you simply cannot believe the extent of the decline at JAG

JAG was billed as the largest collection of African art on the continent. After a recent visit I find that very hard to believe.

The gallery offers free admission, but only two other visitors were there on the Sunday that I visited. The store was closed, several parts of the gallery were shut down, and the place felt that it was not well maintained.

The permanent collection is rather meagre. A special exhibition on Art and Cosmology (pretentious title) consisted mostly of photographs showing very devout South Africans praying, dancing and such - they were very interesting.

The Gallery is In the Central Business District, where I was warned to not walk around, even during the day. My Uber passed by a really interesting-looking crafts and food fair in Joubert Park, but I was told not to go.

I don’t remember the price but I do remember spending just a couple of hours there. It’s not something remarkable and it is in a dangerous neighbourhood. But i think it is always interesting to visit places that promote culture

Such a shame. Beautiful building. Was expecting to see art. Only a Tilson photography collection. Do not go on Sunday as cafe and shop closed.

I read that this is the largest gallery on the sub-continent. I hope not, because it took 30 minutes to see the entire space. The upper floors are closed off, and part of the main floor is closed for painting, etc. Most of the displays were contemporary, with only two rooms dedicated to some un-dated artifacts from the Kwana-Natal area.
