Peace and relaxation

Great suburban place, very calm and tranquil. My family and I really enjoy going by the lake. We love having picnics.

A pleasant suburban Johannesburg park of yesteryear - well worth a visit
Jan 2020
I called here courtesy of the Red bus tour - it is the first stop and about 10 mins from Rosebank Mall start.

A pleasant park situated in a nice area, not that far from central Johannesburg. As a European by myself instinct told me I would safe here ( late morning) as I saw a lady with young child and several joggers and cyclists going round the man made lake. Unfortunately the park is past its best but the authorities are doing a decent job in trying to keep it in good order and its appearance is not helped erosion work on a fair bit of the shoreline.

There is a decent block paved path around the lake which needs some attention and generally this large park is looking tired. The park does have a lovely setting and looking into the distance is a background of trees going into the hills. There is a boathouse but no boats for hire when I was there.

I did have one unsettling moment when I was approached by an opportunist but unthreatening beggar who was after R10 so it does perhaps pay to be vigilant at all times if you are by yourself.

I enjoyed my visit here and my mind wandered back to how it must have been in it's halcyon days of yesteryear. Well worth a visit if you can access it fairly easily.

A boating time
Sep 2018
My wife and I went to celebrate
My daughters birthday
Her and a group of her friends all joined up together for a social get together
We forgot several things so I popped into the restaurant there and they were very obliging and assisted us with the items we forgot
They did not even charge us for them.
Afterwards we all went for a spin on the lake and it was fun rowing around especially venturing near the bird island and seeing the wide variety of bird life there
Then we had fun dodging the fountain spray in the middle of the lake
The boats man were very helpful helping us in and out of the boat
My co passenger was in a caliper and they rendered her the the most considerate service they could
The curio shop there was also an interesting experience as well
Would I go back there again
Definitely YES

Beautiful park

The place is beautiful, on a sunny day is perfect for a picnic, a walk or just watching birds. Some parts are a bit dirty, please don't litter.

Stroll around the lake
Oct 2018 • Friends
Fairly park-like spot in central Joburg, take the family for a stroll around the lake or a picnic under the trees, rent a rowboat, with some restaurant facilities as well.

We went to Zoo Lake Bowls Club. OMG what fun we had on a Friday afternoon. We had quite a few games. The bar service was impeccable. Food was good. This place is so cheap. Gets quite busy in the afternoons after work.

Restful Park in the middle of Johannesburg
Aug 2018 • Friends
This venue is a magnificent rolling Park with an abundance of trees all leading down to a lake, the Zoo Lake. One can wander through the trees and then sit next to the lake and enjoy the peace of the City. There are ducks everywhere and a restauarant , Moyo, for something to eat or a coffee. It is truly tranquil and not difficult to access from Jan Smuts Avenue, One can walk for hors or just sit next to the lake and enjoy the birdlife and the water. It is a must for every Johannesburg citizen and for a foreigner.

Whilst the price was most acceptable there were several issues that led us to believe this was the first time the landlords had let out apartment? The bedroom was rather cramped. We were supplied with less than acceptable bathroom towels. They were tattered. We were also requested not to use the landlords 'good' tablecloths! We were given no pots or pans on which to cook as the landlords were not sure of our level of 'kashrut' (of our religious observance). It is my opinion that the landlords should advertise for tenants that are Observant of the Sabbath and keep the strict laws of being kosher. We were however left with paper plates, paper cups and plastic cutlery. The Landlady then did acquiesce to us buying a pot and pan which would be deducted from the deposit. Unfortunately the apartment was extremely dusty due to building that was being constructed adjacent to the apartment. In fairness to the landlords they were unaware of this. This exacerbated the dust problem as well as to unbearable noise from at 8:00 - 16:00. Once the building was completed silence reigned. Once again the Landlords allowed us to bring in a cleaning lady to clean the apartment which would also be deducted from the deposit. The area is relatively accessible to all major parts of the city and beyond as it is situated just off Hapalmach and there is the No 13 bus right on the corner which takes you right into town. Another positive is that it is a 12 minute walking distance to the well-known Emek Refaim. I believe with experience the landlords could improve their apartment for future guests.
