This is a wonderful open space in Johannesburg- more of a park than the traditional definition of a botanical garden. Has a range of entry points - including an entry and area for people with dogs. Has a few dams and a kids play area. Lots of trees, lots of grassy spaces. Perfect for picnics and just chilling. Check out the fascinating bookshop at one of the entrances. A place we go back to often. As do many families, couples and groups of friends. Thank goodness for this breathing space in Joburg.

Poor example of a botanic garden, lots of trees but very little in the way of flowers. Place had a rather neglected air, lots of bare earth….. Toilets were dreadful, no locks on doors and no hand washing facilities.

Got kicked out for being in a group of more than 20 unless we paid a high amount to be in this free, public park...

doesn't bode well for family lunches, days with friends and all the things that a botanical garden facility is supposed to be. So disappointed.

Absolutely a astonishing place to visit specially in a sunny saturday morning..
Just dont forget wear a hat and wear sneakers to be more confy
I would advise people to forget about the "Botanical Gardens" name
Its more a Park, a place where you can walk, do some jogging and of course a family picnic near the water, and lets not forget about water sports like kayaking..
Is a green lung inside a concret beast that is Joburg, if you feel like talking a walking and get some fresh air, this is the place and the entrance is free
You can take everybody there, the kids, teens even the senior citzens and the dogs who like to run around the park, just be aware of the entrances so that one doesnt get lost..
If you are in Johannesburg just take time and go there for a stroll specially under the tree boulevard near the Lake..

For a city park, this site is huge (circumference 5km if you include the sports facilities). Moreover, there is a lot of variety in scenery, though English landscape style is dominant. A stream is cutting right through the whole length of the park. Some sections almost resemble forest. Grassy areas provide a sense of openess. There is a rose garden and a lake near Emmarentia dam towards the northeast side suitable for watersports such as kayaking.

The whole park area is fenced and there is security. The main entry point is near the dam (north side). There are smaller gates on the west and east side, but not towards the south (inconvenient for pedestrians like me coming from Melville). Near the gates are parking lots used by most visitors who arrive by car.

The reason I got quite enthusiastic about this park is you can move around in a relatively safe environment. Rather essential after being mugged in Joburg cbd.

Visited for an hour during a sunny afternoon while in Johannesburg. The botanical garden isn’t really that - it’s more like a park with some nice walking and/or biking trails. There are sections with flowers but there are no signs about anything and the maps are mediocre quality at best. I would only visit if you had a spare couple to few hours on a sunny day.

There was also what appeared to be a Sunday flea market / farmers market in the vicinity so do explore that if you are there on a weekend.

Aside from the rose beds and some cacti the real draw is the large expanse of grassed areas to walk through

We were very disappointed @ the current state of the Gardens. Once beautifully maintained, visually stimulating and peaceful, the gardens have fallen into a state of disrepair. In the Rose Garden area, the walk through the area was always beautiful, where it was in or out of rose season as there was always the sound and sight of tumbling water, mulched gardens and ponds. All the water features and fountains had been turned off, and the gardens don't look as if they have been attended to for quite some time. Sad to see particularly in light of the climate of the current environment in South Africa, people need to see beauty, tranquility and joy.

The botanical gardens at Emmarentia are superbly maintained and contain a wonderful array of plants.

Set near the lake where one can find a coffee shop, paddlers, sailors, ducks and dogs it is a lovely outing on a Summer's day or winter morning.

Really beautiful and highly recommended.
