About
Nowhere can the story of South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill. Constitution Hill is a national heritage site situated in the Johannesburg CBD and is home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa- the highest court in the country on constitutional matters. Once a place of injustice and brutality, where South Africa's leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained, the site has been transformed into a place of solidarity and democracy, home to the Women's Gaol museum, Number Four Museum, and Old Fort Museum. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours and has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes. The vast variety of programmes hosted at Constitution Hill enable us to embrace current issues, celebrate days of national significance, address matters of public interest and create a forum for public debate. With its rich history and character Constitution Hill boasts of ideal platforms to educate and learn about South Africa's story. ConHill, as it is famously known, also offers a variety of multi-purpose venues, suitable for conferencing, performances, a large array of events and for public activities and programmes.

It is hard to see how they treated people like animals and was only closed in the 1980s ,
So, really, not so long ago ,
Is great that they turned it into the Constitutional Court as the place that took peoples rights away, now gives people those rights
They even used some bricks from prison for the new court
Both Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandi spent time there, in different timeliness due to protesting their peoples discrimination

Constitution hill and the men’s and women’s prisons are well worth a visit. Makes you realise the suffering that blacks coloured and indeed white people went through between 1900/1986. It also makes you realise that the human race should never get itself into that situation again, whereby they are prejudiced against any sort of people.. my wife and I both found the visit particularly interesting.

This tour was so moving! Lorraine, our tour guide, really brought to life the conditions of the prisoners located here. I literally had to wipe away tears as she recounted the prison's history. She is a wonderful historian and was able to answer our many questions. She also gave us a wonderful overview of the establishment of the Supreme Court in South Africa and the set up of the court chamber.

Another tour highlight was meeting an ex-female prisoner, Mama Palesa, and hearing her recount her time in the women's prison. She is full of grace and forgiveness. I am a better person for visiting Constitution Hill and hearing these stories of pain and survival.

A very interesting place, very well guided and explained. Even though it was really sad to know how unhumanlly worked, it’s part of history. Really recommend this visit

Constitution Hill is a must visit for travelers to South Africa - and for South Africans alike - for people who wish to develop a better understanding of the country's recent past and its present. I recently did a one hour tour of the complex which focused mostly on the prison but also included a visit to the Constitutional Court. The tour guide painted a vivid picture of what life would have been like in the prison and how one's treatment depending entirely on one's racial category. The prison housed political prisoners and criminals, living cheek by jowl under the most inhumane and dismal circumstances. From there, we visited the Constitutional Court which is a true inspiration. Built in part with bricks from a demolished section of the old prison, the court transformed despair into hope. Its fascinating from a design and architectural perspective and filled with symbolism.

Our guide, Thelma, was so knowledgeable. She really showed us the inhumanity of the prison and the inspiring endurance of the unjustly imprisoned people. We recommend her and this tour to all.

When you come here go to the visitor center, there you can buy tickets and opt for either the standard one hour highlights tour, or do the two hour tour. With the one hour tour you visit the old fort/prison and learn how inmates were treated and then you go into the constitutional court which was created in 1994 to try cases regarding human rights. The court building is small and lies a few meters from the old fort/prison. The site lots messy but don’t be deceived. The court was deliberately placed in this spot as a counterpoint to the injustices inflicted on prisoners and is intended to show that the new court will not allow injustice to be perpetrated again in this new South Africa. The court building, the architecture, sculptures and landscape are were all symbolically chosen to reflect this idea. If you opt for the two hour tour I think you are also shown the female prison.

If you come here (and you should), it can be hard to find the visitor center because there is ongoing construction. Don’t be put-off.

Lastly when my wife and I were there we took an Uber to the site, Upon leaving the site we called another Uber but before it arrived we were approached by a person wearing a security badge, hat and name tag representing himself as an employee of the site. He then told us we had to wait elsewhere for an Uber and over the next 10 minutes tried to convince us that we needed a Uber pass which we could get at the local ATM machine. This person was working with two other guys in an elaborate con. Bottom line, visit the site, but like everywhere else in Joburg, be cautious.

Very interesting place to visit, walk around and learn more of the history of Constitution Hill, also the place of the Constitution Court. Unfortunately the only time during our three week visit to South Africa to encounter very unfriendly, rude guards.
