The center of the business neighborhood in Johannesburg. It is ok for a walk during the day. Nothing else.

Many would associate Mahatma Gandhi with India, but few know about Mahatma Gandhi's influence in South Africa. By visiting this square, one gets a better insight on Mahatma Gandhi's early life in South Africa, which is lesser known.

I am from the land of Gandhi so when the city sightseeing bus I was touring with announced that we are about to reach Gandhi Square I could not help but chose to hop off and spend sometime there.
All Indians are aware that Gandhi was a lawyer and started his practice in South Africa. We are also aware that his world famous movement of 'Ahimsa' & 'Non Cooperation' was first started here. However when I got down from the bus there was nothing that exciting to gather- other than an imposing statue of Gandhi.
I did not find the locality safe so immediately hopped on the next bus which came after 30 mins.

The central business district of Johannesburg is not safe. Gangs targeting tourists operate in the area.
I was attacked by five men in broad daylight on busy Albertina Sisulu road (Market road), three blocks up from Gandhi square. They came from three different directions and I was on the ground before I knew it. They robbed me of my Iphone and money. The aftershock: nobody helped me. Tens of people just stared at me. Some asked: how much money did they take? Or commented: you should not walk alone here as a white man (with facial expressions like: you ask for trouble if you do that). I was not severely wounded (mild concussion, bruises and scratches). I found my bus card that had slipped out of one my pockets. I made it back to my guesthouse on my own.
In retrospect I asked my self the question: why was I targeted? I was modestly dressed (blue jeans and a Tshirt). No valuables like rings, camera or a watch. My phone was deep in my pocket. There were lots of other people walking on Market road. Some were smartly dressed and using their phones (!), walking alone. Yes, I stood out, because I was the only white person in the area, but even a superficial assessment would have been sufficient to conclude I was not a high value target.
Fellow travellers be warned: avoid the center of Joburg. Don't go there not even in small groups. These gangs are violent and professional. I did not observe any police. Joburg is not like any other big world city. Security is much worse than even in cities like Rio and Bogota in Latin America,

Our guided tour with City Sightseeing gave us the opportunity to see this nice memorial of Gandhi and learn about the time he spent in South Africa and how it influenced him in his quest for the independence of India . Very interesting !

Ghandi Square in Joburg has always been full of character although it has had its ebbs and flows.A mix of African music shops, hemp cloth retailers, South African restaurants and NGOS are giving the areas its own character. It is a gateway into other areas of Joburg and well worth a walk and a look

I mean it is a big square and there is really nothing much special about. It is only nice stop on with city seeing bus tour. You can see the statue from a distance.

This square is a local bus terminal which is located south off the city center. It is quite a distance to other attraction of the city. Anyway, you won't missed the statue of Mahatma Gandhi if you are within the square.

I visited the square as part of the Hop On/Hop Off Tour. I did not Hop Off. Did not look safe in the square. There really isn’t anything else to explore there. Shame. However, it was fascinating to learn Gandhi was a lawyer.
