About
Please join us at the Dickensian book shop that is James Findlay’s gallery at Rand Club. Aptly situated in one of Johannesburg's landmark Neoclassical buildings. This 175 square metre basement space has been transformed into a book shop and gallery with a stage. On exhibition are hundreds of posters; more than 500 antique maps; over a thousand hand coloured botanical lithographs and of course books. “It’s the dramatic side for this fascinating industry that I’m trying to present here” says James Findlay who has been in the trade for 23 years. "These vintage posters are artefacts themselves. Not only do they represent a period in our history, they were present at that time. These decorative objects are not only there to beautify people’s homes, but they have the added allure of being historical”. Join us at one of our regular events to hear stories about these treasures, meet other like minded collectors and ask the advice of a dealer.

What a gorgeous shop in the stunning Rand Club!

I am biased because, as a collector, I have spent significant sums of money purchasing maps, art, books and other unique items from James. His prices are amazing for the quality. There's a lot of hidden gems in terms of prints and books, and 95% of everything is reasonably priced and if it costs more it's worth it!

James is a great wealth of knowledge. He has more than just older Africana (which is what I collect) but also modern political (ie. 1950s to 1980s) art, posters and paraphernalia and an awesome mix of classical, botanical, architectural and other delights.

We met James at his shop after having celebrated a private birthday dinner at the Rand Club. He is a fascinating and delightful character who spent some time telling us about the Rand Club and his collectables bookshop, before taking us on a tour through the Rand Club - in itself a worthwhile reason to visit. James has collected many precious pieces of history. We found the old political posters and maps very interesting , amazing the great many old and historical books. A treasure trove of historical posters and books and well worth a visit

James Findlay's new destination bookstore at Rand Club in Johannesburg is a book lover's dream: the basement space in the iconic Rand Club draws you into what feels like a secret getaway where you forget about the busy city outside and step into a world of maps, books, posters...the walls really do talk. One can apparently hire the space to host dinners...what a perfect spot for book clubs! It is also a perfect way to catch a glimpse of the Rand Club.

One the best ways to spend a few hours getting immersed in this incredible collection of precious pieces of history. The maps, in particular, are exquisite. You get delightfully lost in them. Fortunately, James brings in expert advice to help you along. Just love this place.

Treat yourself to a visit to James Findlay's Collectable Books and Maps Studio for a "different" and thoroughly enjoyable experience. His eclectic range of interesting items, and his vast knowledge of his subject, make for a thoroughly enlightening outing. The markets, held on the second Saturday of each month and attended by 5 or 6 dealers, are really enjoyable and should be a diary item for history buffs. James usually incorporates two or three short talks by enthusiasts in different fields into these Saturday fairs, adding hugely to the experience.

People can increasingly buy the latest gadget or thing and have it delivered in 24 hours. What makes James Findlay Collectable Books, Antique Maps & Engravings special is that the stuff you find there is rare, steeped in history and it comes with a story. It's not a virtual good or a consumable. And it's not just about what you might discover. It's also about slowing down. Give yourself a couple of hours. Give yourself permission not to answer emails or take calls for an afternoon and immerse yourself in another world.
