It’s very sweet with bunnies and squirrels and chicken running about freely in the gardens.
It’s a bit sad to see so many caged animals. Not all the animals are injured and being rehabilitated. The leopards and lions were bought. But they keep the animals well fed. It is just sad that the beasts aren’t free to get the exercise and normal life in the wild.
But a great job on the injured animals and happily spent funds for keeping care of animals.
All in all - too many caged animals - set
Them free in their natural habitat.
Great staff.
Very very bad roads.

Zanchieta is a hidden gem and we definitely got more than we bargained for. Listening to the lions at night, relaxing on the lawn and having the freedom to roam the farm was such a blessing. We had 3 meals a day and enjoyed the afternoon feeding tour.
Good value for money and a quiet spot to rest and relax.

1. Dirty bedding 2. Not warned that the road was in terrible condition when we phoned to book a caravan site. 3. REALLY worrying was: no emergency number is given - the lady who booked us in shouted ‘close the kitchen’ and the staff up and left without greeting. 4. Disgusted: the lady that booked us in told us that she could not warm our food in a microwave. We were too tired to buy their meat and braai. 5. Great animals & enclosures. Summary: go to see the animals. DON’T spend any time at the lodge.

Zanchieta really is a beautiful location. We visited twice for a working holiday and fell in love with this place. It is hard work taking care about all these animals and everyone on the farm is doing a great job.
It is a rehabilitation centre offering home to a big variety of rescued animals.
Open for public visits it is a great place for day visits with picnic spots and many possibilities to barbecue (braai). The afternoon feeding is an great opporunity to see the carnivores and learn more about the animals.
They offer Lodge accomodation as well. You can stay overnight and enjoy the roar of the lions in the evening.

Definitely a great place to see cats up close!! Lots of rehabilitation of animals that society has not taken care of. Well done Zanchieta team!

Stayed here for 2 nights …. All I can say is wow!! Loved listening to the lions roar in the mornings and evenings! That was definitely my favourite part! The rest of the animals were fabulous with large, clean enclosures. I’m so used to seeing animals in small cages so it was refreshing to see that the staff have really thought about giving all the animals as natural an environment as possible instead of small zoo type enclosures. We were allowed to speak to staff and ask lots of questions while they did the feeding rounds. The staff had a lot of time for us and were very informative. They told us about the animals, talked about each individual animal, their names and ages, how they ended up at Zanchieta through no fault of their own by humans ignorance, neglect or cruelty. Several animals had been bred for the hunting trade and had been rescued through Nature Conservation. They have certainly landed on their feet here, having a home for life, and I wish all animals that could not be returned to the wild could be looked after the way they are here. Their food is all fresh and given either daily or twice daily depending on the species. It is evident that good animal husbandry and great care is given to each animal, no matter the species. The rooms were very spacious and clean with our own private bathroom. Despite being colder weather we were warm and comfortable. The meals were wonderful, tasty and filling. I enjoyed it so much that I have booked to come back for two weeks in July! I cannot wait! We were collected and dropped back off to the airport without any fuss. Thank you so much to all the staff for making us feel so welcome! The only negative I can think of is how short our stay was! I can’t wait to be back!!! See you soon Zanchieta …. You have stolen a piece of my heart!
