About
Raptor Rescue Plett is a rehabilitation & awareness centre for birds of prey. We service the conservation needs of the area by providing a refuge & sanctuary for sick, injured and orphaned birds, and are committed to rehabilitate & release wherever possible. Our aim is to give the public a window into this important conservation work through our daily guided tours and flying demonstrations. Our tours take place at 10:00am, 12:00pm and 2:00pm (we are closed on Mondays except during school and public holidays) Visitors and school groups are welcome to join us for one of our tours whereby some of our non-releasable birds are free flown in their natural surroundings, allowing you an up-close and personal experience with these magnificent creatures. We do not promote any handling of our animals and public access to the centre is restricted to these time allocations. We are conveniently located off the N2, and form part of The Heath, a charming cluster of shops and quaint restaurant

As an amateur bird photography enthusiast who finally got a decent camera, I felt like a kid in a candy store at the Raptor Rescue centre.

The guide was very knowledgeable and a great source of interesting facts. It was a rare opportunity to get up close to these majestic birds while learning about the different species in general as well as the personal character quirks of the individual birds.

I went on the tour by myself, but was joined by three generations of a family, who all seemed to get something worthwhile from the tour and the show.

I can highly recommend this.

Fascinating rescue centre for birds of prey. We learned such a lot while being well entertained by our guide Mark , who clearly knows and loves all his birds. A blind falcon has become a particular friend and she obviously trusts Mark completely. A delightful and educational hour in a calm forest setting, we can highly recommend this tour and the entire Heath Complex!

We went back to Raptor Rescue 21st January 2022 and were even more delighted by Brian’s tour. The opportunity to learn more and experience these beautiful birds close up was delightful. They are magnificent and Brian’s passion and insights once again filled us with wonder and delight. This is well worth doing both from a support of the rescuing of injured birds but also we found it very interesting interactive experience up close. Buy something in the shop or donate to support this really worth while cause.

The guide was charismatic, engaging, interesting. The center is well cared for and the cages and birds looked after.
Great place to learn about raptors. The show consisted of the barn owl, crow and another owl - they swooped very close to our heads. They was no interaction between the birds and people and the show didn’t display any of the bigger birds of prey. Show and center was enjoyable.

What an important centre for raptor rescue - and education! My dad (in his 80s) and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the rescued birds, learning about the different species and hearing about how some can be rehabilitated, and why others can't. The fish eagles are magnificent!
The flying demo was so interesting too, seeing two different owls and a crow who has found his way to the centre.
I thoroughly recommend it and what this centre are doing.

Raptor Rescue Plett is a fun and educational experience. Their determination to help rescue and release those birds that can while providing a loving home for those that cannot is admirable. The display is engaging and it is terrific to be so close to these beautiful creatures.

I hope schools in the Plett area arrange visits to this sanctuary. The children could learn a lot! It’s evident Mark loves his work and he is thus interesting and informative and interacts excellently with his “audience”. It is such a worthwhile cause and deserves support from every quarter. I visited with family who were visiting me from Australia (they left SA some thirty years ago) and apart from the fact that they were spellbound by the display, I felt incredibly proud. Thank you for a wonderful hour.

I recently visited this Raptor Rescue center in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. I was amazed at how neat the whole place was, especially the cages for the rescued birds. The staff is very friendly and Mark did an amazing job with the tour. He has a lot of knowledge and answered all of my questions. He is very passionate about what he does and adds for a great atmosphere. It is also clear that the funds are going for the right cause: the birds, so I would recommend making a donation or supporting them through buying a gift at their shop at reception, I certainly did! - A t-shirt with a lovely owl on (my favourite bird). I really enjoyed the display of the birds flying, definitely a must do if you visit Plett.

We really enjoyed it.The man in charge showed us all the birds, explained their back history and how this applied to how they are currently housed and loiked after, how they are exercised where appropriate and the aims for the sanctuary and birds for the future. It was fascinating to watch some of them flying and be told how others are encouraging/ mothering new acceptees at the centre, which have been for example rescued.
A wonderful experience which needs support and donations. Very worthwhile.
