Amazingly modern
May 2019 • Family
NELM should be on your top 5 places to see in Grahamstown. It is modern but is full of history. Children will be intrigued by what is on offer inside and outside the building. It may stick out like a sore thumb in the leafy suburb it is in but it so worth it!

Very modern building
Jul 2018 • Friends
A very modern building for Grahamstown, but very nicely constructed with inetresting detail and lovely trees that must still develop. Saw a number of shoes there between the theree of us - extremely comfortable venue. Interesting to look around the history displays pertaining to the area. I went on a very interesting Discovery trail hosted by Basil Mills - he is so knowledgeable and obviously passionate about what he does. He spoke of the history and then we went on a tour of the gardens where he told us of the medicinal properties of the plants besides other interesting facts. To be recommended.

Unexpectedly Good

One does not expect to see a real gem such as this in a sleepy hollow. The museum is a real asset to the city and nationally. It is also an ideal venue for some of the shows of the National Arts Festival with it its high tech auditorium. Certainly worth a visit.

Complete surprise – the new complex is superb and certainly worthy of it’s status as a national facility. The setting in an indigenous water “light” garden is unique and the entire complex conserves every drop of grey and rainfall water that they have. The public displays are varied and inter-active and from young to old we came away itching to make our debut as authors. I have as yet to take a guided tour of the archives but the “public friendly” staff will willingly arrange such an adventure, be you an individual/family or school group. Although primarily focused on English they are apparently posed to take an interest in other South African Languages. Lovely visit.

A great piece of modern eco-architecture

I haven’t explored the museum but have been there for talks, receptions and book launches. It is well worth a visit just to walk around the grounds. The building is designed on modern sustainability principles and the water feature in the grounds is worth a look.

This is a delightful structure from an architectural and design point of view. It has been positioned in a beautiful part of this college town and features amusing art in the courtyard

The rise of the modern museum
Nov 2016 • Business
This is South Africa's newest large museum, in a special-purpose building which has been specially designed and fit for purpose.

This is so new that the exhibition area is not yet open, but just a walk around the area is worthwhile exploring the various design features.

Would be nice to have a "behind the scenes" tour....

Brand new and although not fully operational still worth a visit. It has state of the art technology preserving all the old books and relics. The building is as green as one can get.

Temporarily closed!

I was really looking forward to visiting this museum of English language, but great was my disappointment when I discovered that the displays are being packed away and crated to the new venue, at 25 Worcester St, described by the previous reviewer.
A telephone call to NELM confirmed the pending move, but they were unable to say when the museum would be reopened to the public.

NELM - A Five Star Green Building
Oct 2015
The new National English Literacy Museum is built in Worcester Street in Grahamstown and has been certified by the Green Building Council of South Africa as the first (5 Star) Green Star certified project in the category Public & Education Buildings in South Africa. It is also the first (5 Star) Green Star certified project in the Eastern Cape Province in all Categories. There are numerous display areas as well as humidity controlled sealed archives and a small lecture theater. A modern building with energy saving measures installed and there is even a green garden area at the back of the building on the first level. Will be worth visiting during Arts Festival week or when passing through Grahamstown.
