A spur of the moment decision on a visit to Mermaid's Pool at Nahoon Beach for my family turned into a really fantastic, relaxing and enjoyable experience.

The water was ice-cold, but that did nothing to stop my 8 yr old daughter from swimming in the pool and even trying her hand at snorkelling to look for some fish (not much).

My 2 yr old son chose to stay away from the "big water" and spent his time looking for shells and pebbles on the beautiful but small beach area.

You feel safe in this area, the parking area is within eye-site of where you play and The Reef Café is just up the hill from you.

There are scenic boardwalks (a little damaged in areas due to age) that let you see some magnificent views and also take you over the hills into the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve on the one side and back to Nahoon Beach proper on the other side.

All in all, it was a fun few hours, sheltered from the wind and myself and family really enjoyed it

The beach itself is fantastic. Spacious so you don't have to sit on top of one another and no rocks that could hurt your feet. No strong currents either. Unfortunately the walk from the car park to the beach is far. There is a take-out restaurant available.

I can’t remember where I found Kevin Agram’s name for a guided trip while our ship was docked in East London, South Africa, but I am glad I did because he organized a fine experience for us. He passed us off to a local man - I am so sorry that I didn’t write down his name, but he used to work for General Motors but lost his job when the plant closed. He was terrific. He knew a lot about the area, the government, the social and political conditions facing the South African government. He took us around the city, to several townships, to a wildlife park that was closed on Mondays. We also went to the beaches and stopped for a pancake. It was a lovely day.

Lovely to go to, not a lot of parking but safe and nice for the family.
Pity about the sewerage in the river though
The municipality won't fix the problem though

We spent the entire day here, it was perfect. We were told about this by some locals at the hotel one night, because it isn't on the tourist list!
Plenty of sand, sea and space and life guards on duty all day long. We have a blast, parking is free and plenty of room. You do have to tip the car porters (they look after the cars to stop theft). We only tipped them 10R and they were pretty happy with that.
There are showers near the car park to wash the sand off and a small beach hut but we took our own food and had a picnic on the beach. We swam and even tried our hand a body boarding! Perfect day.

Such a beautiful place to go for a walk or sit on the beach. We walked along the beach in the water and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet. However I'd imagine that weekends can be busy!

Worth a visit!

Nahoon Beach is a must-see for anyone visiting East London. For a nice long walk on the beach, park at Nahoon Corner and walk all the way to Nahoon River Mouth. Expect lots of happy dogs to come and greet you.

For a more scenic view, try the boardwalk at Nahoon Reef (easy, short walk) or walk down the coast, over the rocky outcrop (wear sandals) and visit the glassy beach - tiny and perfect for a little privacy. Don't wander alone or at night and stay watchful - it's safe, but it's also secluded, so don't take chances, foreign tourists to East London tend to be more trusting and less vigilant than locals.

It was the beast way to discover East London.
Nahoon Beach was isolated with great view over the dunes, sandy beach and such a quite place to chill and relax.

Nahoon beach and Nahoon River is a popular playground for families and anyone who enjoy a nice beach. Safe swimming, with stunning views from the dunes and walkways over the sandstone cliffs. The two cafe/ tea rooms that are near by and within easy walking distance offer great food.

This lovely place screams of tranquility and environmental consciousness, located on a stunning beach. however, the service was sloppy and the bread we received was unfortunately laden with mould. while that was disappointing, the place itself remains a great option for anyone looking for a quite hidden spot after a lovely beach walk
