Our friends from Wasilla took us here for the second time because I enjoyed the experience 14 years ago. I was not disappointed to see it again. We always enjoy the beautiful scenery and views. Everyone who visits the area should check it out.

This is a dont miss activity in Hatcher pass. The mining town is great history, the views are incredible, and there’s great places to hike. Tip: From the lower level parking lot hike up the dirt trail on the left hand side. It is shorter...More

Toured this with our three and five year old kids. The history is cool. It’s sad to see that the condition of this property is poor and will continue to deteriorate until there is nothing. See it before it’s gone. (1-2 hr event for us)

This mine is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen in several trips to Alaska. Kennicott our near McCarthy is larger and more “impressive” but Independence is awesome! Great trails, good accessibility and crazy beautiful views!

This was my second time up to the pass while visiting in Wasilla. I enjoyed the drive and visit both times. This time the road was open up to the parking lot which had a lot of visitors in it. It was fun and interesting...More

I was so looking forward to this visit but the area was still closed due to snow on the ground - even though Google said it was open. This was on June 19. No where online could I find what date the place would open....More

We spent an hour or two at the mine. The history has been preserved and there is a lot of information to take in. It is interesting and a good stop by if you have time.

History surrounded by incredible views and tranquility. It doesn't get better than this. Spend a day exploring the old buildings and exhibits to get a feel of the history with original artifacts dispersed throughout the park, followed by some hiking to discover the surrounding area....More

The first ten miles is open year round but over the top and down the (rough) road back to parks opens when the snow is off the road. In June the pavement is smooth and beautiful. You can call AK Parks at (907)745-2527 to... More

Roughly 25-30 miles. Good paved roads all the way. Beautiful views along the way. If needed, when you get to parking area, follow signs to handicapped unloading area. Eliminates a little uphill walking.
