We visited this home as part of a tour organised through our cruise line and run by Nui Travel).
If you are going to Tahiti you are sure to learn about the ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ and this is the home of the author. So it is definitely worth a couple of hours of your time.
The background history and story is worth listening to and makes you want to revisit one of the movies.
Certainly worth a visit

We had an interest in the story of the mutiny on the Bounty, and this museum provided lots of interesting information. It was in a charming setting, too and the staff were very helpful and were very gracious about sharing information.

We loved visiting this historic house. The story of James Norman Hall and the link to HMS Bounty and its crew is fascinating, the staff are warm, friendly and full of knowledge. The house is stunning and transports you back to the heady days of the early 20th centuary, you can easily spend half a day being immersed in this world.

James Norman Hall and his friend, Charles Nordoff (1887 to 1947)) are best known for "The Bounty Trilogy" (1932) although their first collaboration was in 1920 when they co-wrote about their World War I experiences in the Lafayette Flying Corps, which experiences are shown in the Museum's memorabilia. Nordorff stayed in Tahiti for a couple of decades whilst Hall died there.
Why go to the James Norman Hall Home, just outside Pape/ete on the ring road in Arue?
If you are interested in that famous Mutiny, there is plenty there to see at the Museum. If you are interested in 20th century expat life in Tahiti, the Museum portrays that very well.
As well, there is a good kitchen, so a leisurely lunch, either inside the colonial structure, or outtside under tree and partial shade cloth cover.
As well, there are occasional talks on Friday late afternoons and sometimes special dinners, where guests are seated throughout the house, giving the visitor an insight into what life must have been like before Tahiti became a tourist and military destination, the latter suggested by Bengt and Marie-Thérèse Danielsson in their book, "Mururoa Mon Amour}.
The credit for today's tourism interest is another connection to James Norman Hall: the 1962 film "Mutiny on the Bounty", starring the late Marlon Brando who, like Hall and co-author Nordoff, came to associate himself with Tahiti through his purchase of Tetiaroa atoll, now a resort and nature reserve called (naturally enough) "The Brando".
The Facebook page gives a flavour of the museum.
I should declare my interest: I was invited to give a lecture at the Museum, just before the COVID exclusions closed travel from Australia and to French Polynesia.
If you are including Point Venus in your Tahi9ti itinerary, for the James Cook monument, this Museum should be on your itinerary.
There is parking across the around the island road and the local bus stops are just there: just tell the driver and they will let you out at th stop either just at the old gate, coming from Pape'ete, or across the road at the car park if you are completing an around the island trip.

Wonderful museum for anyone and especially anyone interested in Mutiny on the Bounty. The docent is very knowledgeable, very dedicated, very ladylike and and one of sweetest folks you will meet. The tour is great and the house is beautiful. Banana mango bread cake was the icing on the cake. And you will want to watch the movie (s) again.

Neat little museum about 15 minutes from the airport. It can be visited quickly as the house is just a few rooms but it’s interesting with 1930 ish tropical furniture and old photos and books of the owner. There’s also a section devoted to his flying military career. This American had an amazing life. I just wish they explained more about how he and his co-author collaborated.

The little cafe open for lunch seems like a nice spot too. There’s a breadfruit tree in the garden allegedly from the strain that Bligh took yo grow breadfruit in the Caribbean.

This was a very interesting house to visit. The guide at the house gave us a really good insight into the work of James Norman Hall. The collection of photos and his books were just amazing.
We were very lucky as James Norman Halls granddaughter Kate was at the house when we visited, she gave us her personal recollections of her family times in Tahiti and shared some stories about her grandfather.
There is a cafe with outside seating.
Well worth a visit even if you’re not into books or films.

James Norman Hall co-authored Mutiny on the Bounty and was a World War I fighter pilot. This house is full of his mementoes and artifacts from a very interesting life. We found it extremely interesting.
