This old Russian Orthodox village houses a unique cemetery, in which each grave is surrounded by a small, decorative burial house. One of the region's oldest buildings, a church built of logs, was constructed before 1870.

A lovely place with a lovely story and a well informed guide. We stopped here on our way to Palmer and it was well worth the stop. We learned about the history of the local people and how they were influenced by the Orthodox church...More

I live a couple of miles from the site. When you live in Alaska and host a lot of friends you end up playing tour guide. This is always on the itinerary. It is an example of the pre-American interaction of Russian and native cultures...More

I am sorry that I don't remember our guide's name but she really gave us a lot of information and answered all our questions. The spirit houses were amazing to see and the church was beautiful! Bring bug spray. A good stop north of Anchorage.

The spirit houses were fascinating. Some are falling into disrepair, but I understand that they aren't intended to be maintained once they are in place. A local resident met us in the church and explained things about the religion, the church, and the burial customs....More

Our proprietor at the B & B where we stayed recommended we stop on our way to Denali. While you can view the cemetery, there are no guides on the week-end. I knew very little about Alaskan Indian burial practices and the influence of the...More
