This old Russian Orthodox village houses a unique cemetery, in which each grave is surrounded by a small, decorative burial house. One of the region's oldest buildings, a church built of logs, was constructed before 1870.

I am sorry that I don't remember our guide's name but she really gave us a lot of information and answered all our questions. The spirit houses were amazing to see and the church was beautiful! Bring bug spray. A good stop north of Anchorage.

The spirit houses were fascinating. Some are falling into disrepair, but I understand that they aren't intended to be maintained once they are in place. A local resident met us in the church and explained things about the religion, the church, and the burial customs....More

Free parking provided, small cash fee of $5.00 for the tour of the village, church and cemetery. I absolutely loved the tour and I learned a ton about the culture combination of native Alaskan and Russian Orthodox Church. Wouldn't be a good tour on a...More

Our proprietor at the B & B where we stayed recommended we stop on our way to Denali. While you can view the cemetery, there are no guides on the week-end. I knew very little about Alaskan Indian burial practices and the influence of the...More

The Churches, old and newer, are unique examples of Old Russian Orthodox Christianity. The graveyard with its little house like structures are a sight to behold. The tour guide provided pertinent information about this enduring religion and the impact it had and has on Alaska....More
