About
If you've heard you should skip San Jose, you've been hanging out with the wrong people. For over six years we've been showing visitors the best of San Jose (we locals call it "Chepe"). Weather its clubbing in our weekend's Pub Crawl, sampling the best craft brews in town or visiting our iconic Central Market, you'll always get an insight of the local way of life, our history and why do we love it here. We hope you come out to explore and see what most tourists don't get to see. Carpe Diem, Carpe Chepe

We joined the pub crawl mid February with visiting friends from Argentina, the United States, Italy and The Philippines. It was a great way to spend time together, have our guests see some of San José, and learn more about Costa Rica from locals.
We had previously joined Carpe Chepe for the free city tour, and since we had a good time then, we decided to sign up for this pub crawl. We were not disappointed. All of our friends enjoyed themselves and we got to discover some new places ourselves as well.
We visited different bars and didn't have to wait in line at any of the these places. This was really nice because some of the bars had lots of people lined up outside waiting for their turn to go inside. The guides were very friendly, bilingual, and made sure everyone enjoyed their night out. They seemed to be having a good time themselves as well and they kinda just felt like part of our group!
It sometimes took a while to get drinks, but other than that we had zero complaints. We would definitely sign up for this pub crawl again in the future, or try one of the other tours that Carpe Chepe offers. If you're looking for a fun night out, this is it!

Every time we come through San Jose we make sure and do 1 if not more tours with Carpe Chepe. The walking tour is fantastic and full of History. The Pub and Craft Beer tours take you to places only the locals know and that we would have probably never stumbled upon. San Jose and Costa Rica have a great craft beer scene and as any Costa Rican visitor knows, amazing food. These folks can be trusted with time and taste.

We had taken the standard City bus Tour of San Jose to see the sights and were left a little underwhelmed but this evening walking tour via 3 different bars/restaurants showed us what we were missing. We had a fantastic time visiting parts of the city we didn’t know existed and learning so much more about the colourful history of San Jose. Our guide was a warm and genial host and so entertaining! You must do this! Carpe form, Carpe Chepe!

Our family of 5 had an educational, delicious, and fun tour with Marcos. We signed up last minute for a Christmas Eve tour of the market and they accommodated us. We all learned a lot about the history, culture and food of Costs Rica. Marcos’ stories were engaging and kept everyone’s attention the entire time, Having done many private tours in our travels, we rate this as one of our favorites! Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn about San Jose and experience the market with a local.

We had the best time and our guides were amazing. Thank Daniel, Amanda and Rachel for being wonderful and sharing your city with us. If you ever have the time to visit San José I highly recommended doing this tour. You’ll get a glimpse of the Costa Rican nightlife.

My boyfriend and I did this tour on our first day in SJO. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and detailed when it came to explaining the history and culture of San Jose City. There were so many things to see that the guide continued the tour even after it was supposed to finish and we really appreciated that. My boyfriend and I actually felt confident enough to walk around the city on your own the next day thanks to this tour. It was more than worth the cost and I definitely would recommend this tour to anyone going to SJO.

We’ve been on the free walking tour with Ama and has a really good time. The tour is perfekt to get a overview of the city and the city’s history. Ama was really fun and had lots of recommendations about what to do and where to travel in Costa Rica.
The company ‚Carpe Chepe‘ wants to show people how beautiful San José is and that it shouldn’t be just a stopover because it‘s near the airport. By doing those tours they really show how nice the city is and how much history it has.
A absolute must do during your stay! Unfortunately we weren‘t able to take another tour. They‘re offering quite a lot which seem to be great fun as well.

This is nothing like the touristy pub crawls you know, it's made & run by locals and you will visit local bars & party at best clubs (skipping really long lines of locals - which by itself proves a lot). I went solo, but I highly recommended even if you're coming with friends/your other half

One of the best free walking tours I have ever been on! Super thorough, and even continued the tour after it was supposed to be finished - the guide showed our group some really great restaurants, bars, shops and hidden gems of San Jose. I never thought I would like San Jose, and you hear so many not great things about the city, but I really enjoyed San Jose because of this tour and our incredible guide (can't remember his name though, but the whole company is incredible!). Would highly recommend!

Hi Katie
We did not book in advance, we just showed up at the designated meeting place. We did tip at the end of the tour. You can leave whenever you need.
Was a great tour
Which tour includes a ride in between bars on a party bus???
Hi! We offer walking tours :) Some of them include private transportation from and to your hotel depending on what you choose. If you are looking for a party tour we recommend the Pub Crawl tour, every Friday and Saturday. Hope you can join!
Cheers,

Hi, cutietc2004. It says on your comment "free walking tour" but the tour says "$25 in advance when I sign up for it." I am a bit confused. What was free? Did you have to pay to get into the bars and night club?

Is this the San Jose Hop On-Hop Off Tour that is advertised here and on Viator? The bus from both sets of pictures look exactly the same.

Hello!
I have friends coming with me to Costa Rica Jan 4-9, and I want to do something awesome for them. Does the tour include drinks or do they buy them at every bar? I don't want them to pay for a thing.

Hello,
This tour includes one complimentary drink/shot at each bar.
All other drinks you need to pay for.
Hope this helps!

Hey! So, I am looking to do some type of pub crawl in San Jose when we visit, however, I am unable to have beer/ gluten. I just want to make sure as a pub crawl there would be other drinks available?

Hi, how are you? Thanks for writing and sorry for the late response. Sure, all bars have different cocktails or mixed drinks that are gluten free for you to choose from. As for the shots included in the tour, you just have to let the guide know of your condition so he can take the proper precautions.
Hope to see you soon :)
