The museum shows the history of Central American civilization before the arrival of the Europeans. It has a section of Numismatics that tells the History of the currency of Costa Rica. The museum features many pieces of gold from the region's ancient natives.

There are some amazing gold artifacts and a history of local money, however, to get the real value from a visit I strongly recommend going with a guide that can explain the full history and significance of the displays.

The top floor in this underground museum is so interesting. As you walk around you can see how Spain ruled Costa Rica, and how subsequent currencies evolved up to today.

An hour at most. It's interesting, without ever being out of this world. Quite small, not expensive. But after you've seen the first 5 cabinets of intricate mini Gold ornaments, the next 27 don't give you much more. If it's raining and you have nothing...More
