- FancyFelToronto, Canada27 contributionsTime well spent, give it a try!The museum is very well constructed and flows you through history and culture in a seamless and engaging manner. Highly recommend for more realistic history about the region that is not discussed at large in North America. Donโt have to be a history buff to enjoy.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2023
- ElchichagtGuatemala City, Guatemala441 contributionsA walk through Costa Rica historyA very nice tour and the guides are very intresting people who knows very well Costa Rica history. Itโs a very large museum so go with time to walk it all through slow and enjoying every room. Wear confortable shoes and your camara or cell phone with full baterry because you will want to record it all.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 April 2023

- RogerDR26Tallahassee, Florida92 contributionsOK: to clarify: this museum experience is FIVE stars FOR COSTA RICA. Itโs NOT the Louvre, NOT the Smithsonian. BUT forCosta Rica, it is an excellent experience, ASSUMING you have some interest in the history and evolution of its peoples (beginning with the native peoples who settled this land thousands of years before Columbus/Colรณn first sighted it around 1500) and the evolving culture and economy of this small country. There is far more material here than can be absorbed in a 3-4 hour visit. If I were to go again, Iโd ask if they would permit a lunch break, and return later the same day.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 October 2023
- The_Wanderer1992Columbia, Maryland1,824 contributionsEducationalWhile in Costa Rice, my husband and I stopped at this museum. This museum goes through the history of Costa Rica up until the present. This museum also has a small butterfly garden. We were not very knowledgeable about Costa Rica's history prior to visiting this museum, but left here, feeling like we learned a lot. My husband liked the fact that the descriptions were bright and easy to read. This museum is also neat as it was used as barracks during the Costa Rica Civil War in 1948. If you're ever in San Jose, I'd highly recommend visiting here.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023
- vcinmdColumbia, Maryland57 contributionsCosta Rica history, butterflies and more!My husband and I had one day in San Jose before our tour started and we are so glad we picked this museum from all the others in the area. We knew very little of Costa Rica history and learned so much. The exhibits were so interesting and there were many helpful details and videos to explain the exhibits. The outdoor courtyard was very pleasant. The butterfly garden was so beautiful and peaceful.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 December 2023
- MarkONaperville, Illinois40 contributionsExcellent way to learn about Costa RicaWe really enjoyed the museum and felt like we were able to see everything in about 2 hours (and we tend to read most of the descriptions). We particularly enjoyed the history of Costa Rica portion, which was exhaustive and educational. The temporary exhibit of documentary photographs of a unique celebration was also eye opening.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 December 2023
- Alicia23 contributionsLearning about the history of Costa Rica and walking amongst butterfliesI definitely recommend visiting this place. Aside from learning about the history of Costa Rica, you also get to walk through a garden of butterflies. At the time of my visit, there was also an "art" exhibition room of canvases and stones. Entry for an adult was CRC 5,750 or $11 where you'll spend roughly 2 hours (I made sure to check out every room and read all descriptions).Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 February 2024

the museum itself was beautiful and the pre-colonization artifacts were my favorite part ! it was definitely a HISTORY museum and not a NATURAL history museum, but that was to be expected. i recommend for sure !!

I wouldn't say there is an awful lot to do in San Jose, so this museum helped pass the time for a couple of hours during my final day in Costa Rica. I went solo, so it was quite pleasant wandering around the butterfly house, and learning about the country's colonial history and recent economic growth.

I don't speak or read Spanish. will I be able to get much out the museum or do you need to know some Spanish to understand the context of the exhibits?
As others have said, many of the exhibits have English information as well as Spanish. I don't speak Spanish either but I enjoyed my visit.
