Great hiking opportunities!
Nov 2020 • Couples
We live in the Auburn/Opelika area and these are great trails within 45 minutes of our house. The Deadening Trail is our favorite ... I would rate it as moderate as it has some climbing on the side nearest the lake. Lots of fun!

Strenuous hike, but gorgeous
Jul 2020
By mistake we wound up following the pink marks on the trail which was the trail that hugged the cliffs, many switchbacks, steep and about 4.2 miles for the whole trek. We passed the fire tower but decided not to hike up to it as we did not want to climb the steps. We should taken the trail to the waterfront which was only .4 of a mile but the decimal pt. Was missing and we did not want to hike 4 miles, mistake. It was the .4 miles. We were happy to finally get back to the parking lot. Quite the sense of accomplishment with my fear of heights and bad knees. I should have taken a photo of the maps of the trails at the beginning of our hike. I’m glad I had a bottle of water in my pocket. The views more magnificent.

Nice....

This is not a lake you can see much of as almost all views are blocked of it when driving in the area. You have to have a house on the lake, have a boat, or do a trail like this one to see much of the lake. So very helpful in being able to see lake. The lake is beautiful! Problem with trail is a lot of dogs without leashes so beware. I'm a dog owner of 2 large dogs but unfortunately a lot of dog owners don't realize that people (children and adults) who are not familiar with animals experience a rush of pure fear and adrenaline when an unleashed dog runs up to them. Wish these pet owners realized this NEVER aids people who don't love animals in their journey towards enjoying them - it makes it worse. Trail is still worth it!.

Beautiful scenery overlooking Lake Martin
Jun 2018 • Family
Have different options of different woodland trails each offering beautiful scenery of Lake Martin, streams and rock formations. Hiking is fairly strenuous on one trail but not to bad on the shorter trail.

Long hiking trail
Jan 2018 • Couples
If you are looking for a challenging trail with many scenic vistas then this is the trail for you. Many different trails, so you can choose how far you want to walk. The trail is high up overlooking Lake Martin near the Martin Dam area. One of the longer trails go down near Chimney Rock, which is a popular hang out for boats in the boating season. Good shoes a must for this trail!

Beautiful

These trails are full of beautiful views. The paths are sometimes narrow. If you are a novice, take a picture of the map at the beginning. There are a lot of hills that are great for exercise. Take water!

Exhausting but So Worth It
Jul 2017 • Friends
We love visiting the Deadening Alpine Trail! The scenery is beautiful along Lake Martin and through the woods and the trail is challenging! This particular trail is a 4.2 mile loop or you can choose the shorter option which is 3.1 I believe. The later two miles are particularly rough with a lot of switchbacks. Every time you think you have left the shore for good you return. My advice would be to make sure you eat either before or bring a lunch, bring LOTS of water, and stop for a bathroom before you leave HWY 280 (there is not one on site). Also be prepared to get a lot of sun exposure and spray for ticks (we had one on us even after spraying). Lastly, on both visits we have seen very few people here on the trail, so be prepared if hiking alone! There are other trails nearby so be sure to check them out! They are all through the same organization. I would also recommend Smith Mountain and the fire tower there. Just be prepared for another uphill trek and ~108 stairs to the top. The view is so worth it though! Their website has driving directions and detailed descriptions of the trails as well.

Good hiking trail
Sep 2016 • Friends
This is part of an interlocking trail system that can take you up and down a forested hill, along the lakefront or a nice combination of both. You can easily go for a short stroll or a moderately strenuous half day hike. The trails are well maintained and fairly well marked. There is a map station to help you plan your hike. One portion of the trail system has a lot of rhododendrons that are beautiful in season.
