Three kilometres away from Podgorica, in a valley at the confluence of the rivers Moraca and Zeta, the ruins of the ancient town of Duklja are located. Duklja is first mentioned by Ptolemy, general in the army of Alexander the Great, in the 2nd century BC. Today this place is one of the most valuable testimonies of presence of the Roman Empire in Montenegro.

We couldn't believe this place wasn't a paid attraction, or at least protected! But we spent a whole afternoon here in the sun, taking photos and checking out the incredible old history. Take a local to get the full rundown of the place - but...More

Roman Ruins on a field the size of a soccer field, just outside of Podgorica. I would not have been too overwhelmed, if it hadn't been for the cute goats. There's a nice spot to go swimming in the river close by.

Remains of old town Duklja are located at the confluence of Zeta in Moraca, only 4-5 kilometers from the center of Podgorica. Unfortunately during many wars almost everything was destroyed, just a few of the old walls are preserved in the original.

It's just a walk around the ruins. Some structures are (barely) recognizable. A one way taxi would be around 2-3 Euros, but it might be hard to find one for the way back. If you have a mobile, you can call one, of course... More
