I loved this place and it would be your favourite if you love untouched history. It has very little residents, all of them living outside of this old complex. It is not restaurated, which means that you feel part of history. Nevertheless there are still a lot of doors and windows, most of which open. You can walk around it - from bottom to the rooftops with no problem. Absolutely authentic, which is the reason why you should be careful and watch your steps. It was mentioned as a by-the-way sight in my book (otherwise a jewel) but it would be my first recommendation if you ever visit Yazd.

One of the most beautiful and picturesque ghost town. It's possible to come there from Yazd by bus (50-100 000Rls), which can drop you to Kharanaq village on the main road No. 68. Ghost town is in east part of Kharanaq and it's alredy deserted, so without entrace, signs etc. You can enjoy climbing on old roofs, discover the town and buildings and in any time - best is during sunset and night. Because it's empty and without any protection you can try to sleep there. We can recommend house near tower and terrace with beautiful view. Near this area is empty rocky desert where you can be alone. Great like relax between Iranian big cities.

The ruins are like a maze, so I suggest you to find a guide who can navigate a safe pathway. It's about 70km far from Yazd.
The mud-brick village of Kharanaq dates back to over 1000 years ago. What remains in this ghost town, is a Qajar-era mosque, a cylindrical 17th-century shaking minaret and a caravanserai, near the entrance of the village. Although these structures have been restored, many of the surrounding buildings are in various states of ruin.

This was a great few hours spent exploring the ruins. Lots of great photo ops and perfect spot for an Iranian picnic!

Interesting place for one of the stops during the day. 1-1,5h is enought for this place. You can buy trip from Yazd for 50 euro. One of the stops is this place. I would recommend this place to the others.

I suggest kharanaq as a must near Yazd, it is 85 KM far from Yazd and it is really a Gem near Yazd.
After visiting inside the village tell your driver that you want to walk in the farms of the village. the view of this village from the farms is amazing and it is really impressive.

This is a ruined, abandaned town, nobody lives here, however, the new town is created just across the street. You can walk around the town and also appreciate the view. The bridge you see in distance conveys water inside. It is very interesting to see ruined well, bathroom, mosque. The mosque was relatively preserved well. The tone of the knocking door is different between left and right. The left is deeper and the right is higher. Men knock the left and women knock the right so that people inside can know who came. Very wise.
We learned these from the guide, who took us here after chak chak. It is better to come by the tour since just walking around Kharanagh does not tell you much because there is know explanation.

We pass by on our way from desert to Yazd...a very interesting ruin town. 2 parts of the town the new one about 180 families live in it and the old one only a few old folks live there, but mostly empty ruin.
The day we were there co-inside with the Iranian Nature holiday. A lot of the people were out in this ruin village BBQing and have a great time with the family. We did not have a guide, so we just walk around and getting lost inside with other people. There is a Mosque within the ruin that has been rebuilt. This is a very good photo site. From the roof top you can see the bridge and a blue dome mosque across.

Salut Sylvie
Nous visiterons l'Iran dans 2 semaines et nous sommes intéressés de visiter pas seulement les villes, mais aussi les alentours.
Comment tu as atteint Kharanagh? Avec transports publiques ou chauffeur ou...? C'était cher? Est-ce qu'il est possible de rester une nuit là ?
Je me réjouis de ta réponse!
Salutations de la Suisse
