We spent 6 weeks on Roatan, Honduras staying in a Condo, approximately an 8 minute walk from Half Moon Bay. We found this to be the perfect location to swim and snorkel š¤æ. Gingers, a restaurant and Bar will let you use their beach chairs as long as you are eating or drinking with them. The food, drinks and service is absolutely top notch there as well. We liked our experience so much that we decided to do it all again in 2024.

Beautiful bay, great place to watch the sunset. Walk the beach over to Ginger's for a nice place to swim, and snorkel. Grab a beach chair (no charge) for a nice place to spend the day.

This is such a beautiful bay, lovely place to see the sunset, and a nice place to enjoy the warm. water. Great snorkeling too. To me, itās more unique and beautiful than the more famous West Bay Beach and unlike West Bay, Half-noon bay is right in the center of West End with a lot of local interesting stores, and a variety of cuisine. The sad thing is the amount of litter (mostly cans, bottles, cups, plastic bags, etc) just thrown into the sand and drifting into the water. Particularly sad to see the litter strewn all around signs posted about the importance of respecting the beach environment. At the very least, they need to add waste bins so itās not all on the sand and water.

We had lunch and swam here and had a great time. The Sun Set restaurant food was great. The free use of the beach made this a great bargain.

We stayed in the Half Moon Bay area for 3 weeks and loved it! Great snorkelling and a relaxing beach! Never more than 30 people on the beach, other than on Sunday afternoons when the locals respectively came to join in on fun in the sun with their families.

in Half Moon Bay, you can walk everywhere easily. Plenty of restaurants, bars, gift shops and dive shops. laid back vibe if you're not into the condo/fancy resort scene. Great value on rooms too!

Great place to find a place to stay with great restaurants, this is not high-end like West Bay but easygoing with a great vibe. Great place to snorkel, sleep and eat. Awesome dive shops right on the beach, we like Moana Divers, they are the best....

Less touristy and busy than other beaches. Not super big and the water is a little cloudier for snorkeling. Some nice souvenir shops nearby (road is busy and narrow, so it's a little stressful with younger kids). There is a fun boat to jump off with a rock wall...we asked our water taxi to stop by it rather than swim all the way out there because there are a lot of boats coming and going.

Great place to get in the water right around the corner from west bay. There is some coral and lots of fishes for a walk in snorkel experience. Quite clean and all the shops on the road will provide anything you may want.
Also in the evening there are 2 street vendors. 1 on the shop side kind of next to woodies grocery he sells chicken or pork tacos, delicious traditional food 3 tacos for 5 bucks. I highly recommend. The ladies are across the street and serve grilled chicken, pork or sausage with fixings. Also a delicious traditional option in the evenings.

The snorkeling access at Half Moon Bay was pretty great. It wasn't as clear as West Bay, but it was also less touristy. The beach seemed to bustle with locals as opposed to tourists, though perhaps the timing of our trip here could have influenced this?
As others have said, the West side of HMB is the usual spot for swimmers/snorkelers given its protection from boats via roped-off buoys. But since I had a relatively difficult time figuring it out myself, I thought I should help others in locating this... the infamous submerged submarine that you can read about is on the Eastern side (watch for boat traffic!). It's just off of Karl's "Go Deeper" dock. In between his dock and his moored dive platform boat available for the public. Just a touch more in the middle of the Bay than the moored diving platform boat (which is also seemingly available for the public!). This boat has rock climbing holds and is a fun high dive.
Speaking of which, it's one of my regrets not actually meeting Karl and taking a deep dive on his submarine... ran out of time and learned of it too late. We did meet Ian his gardener and he was one of the most generous and interesting people I've had the pleasure to meet. The fact that Karl operates such an extraordinary place and benefits the public with his submerged submarine and high diving platform boat... truly extraordinary. You should really check out his Stanley Submarine dive expeditions just on the basis of how cool these people are.

Hi Coreener
Where did you stay at Half Moon Bay? Did you see the Kimpton Grand Rotan? Also, were there a lot of biting flies in the sand? They bumed me out in Belize. did the arrival of the cruise ships overpower the beaches? Many thanks for your time.

I'll be traveling with 2 grandkids, ages 6 and 8. Will they be able to paddle out to the reef from Ginger's or from somewhere else on Half Moon Bay? We'd like to go all the way down to the end by Grand Roatan Resort but I think we might be pressed for time.

We are heading for a week in West End coming up in May. What can you tell me about the beach there, half moon? Is there are a charge for the beach? Any lounge chairs? We want to snorkel lots while there and expect to go other places to Snorkel as well. Any suggestions you can give would be great! Never been to Roatan. Thanks!

Sloth and Monkey park are right across from Little French Key. If you want to get way for a day you can hit both of them. 10$ per person at the Sloth and Monkey parks and 10$ per person on the ferry across to Little French Key. Read my reviews of both on my site. We also rented a car which allowed us to come and go as we pleased and drive the island as well. Hope it helps.

This will be our 5th time to Roatan, and we have always snorkeled at West Bay. However this time we would like to try a different, quieter place. Someone suggested Half Moon Bay. How is the snorkeling there?
Thank You!

Man I'm so sorry I don't get here very often and didn't see your question. I sure hope you enjoyed your trip to Roatan! We dive with Seagrape Plantation Dive Shop at the end of a West End and when we snorkel we rent gear from Seagrape or on the main drag in front of Half Moon at the Eco Park Conservation place and just walk into the water at Half Moon Bay and a short paddle away your on the reef, the left, or north side of a Half Moon Bay. The snorkeling is Great!
If your looking for a place to stay in the future, at Mangrove Dock Condos there's a three bed two bath condo that rents three night minimum called Sunrise Harbor. Check it out! It's beautiful and walking distance from everything in a west end yet quiet with its own fresh water pool and boat dick on the water!
Late but hope it helps for your next trip!

I am sailing on the Norwegian Getaway in October and Roatan is one of our ports of call. I was advised to go to the other side of island. Looking for transportation and place to go on the island

The West End of the Island is beautiful. Your cruise line should advise you of the proper Lisencing Cards to look for on the taxi's or the Vans. If you stay with those that are run by the tourist agencies you will be fine. We have been five times now and never had a problem. For my husband and I we go to the tourist desks inside the port property and request a private tour and they are usually all day, reasonably priced and much better than the beach thing. Of course if your into water than by all means go to the beach. We always ask the driver to take us to his favorite restaurant for lunch and we have never been disappointed. Enjoy your cruise and visit to Roatan.

How far is half moon bay from cruise terminal ?
Guy C
Roatan, Honduras35 contributions
It is about 20 minutes from the cruise ship. You can go by taxi and the more people that pile into it the cheaper it is. Should cost about $5.00 each to go to West End. West Bay has nice beaches but Half Moon Bay in West End has a nice beach there too and more activity like walking down the main street which hugs the shore line. A must iis a visit to the Sundowner's bar on half moon bay. There is a bar right on the beach where you can go for a swim in the clear water then lie down on a long beach chair in front of the bar to quaff a cold beer or a cocktail or sit at the thatched roof bar an chat with the locals or tourists there. Snorkelling equipment is available for rent nearby and is quite nice on the left side of the bay. Enjoy!

Hey, I'm taking a cruise to honduras, the port is in Roatan . What's the best way to get here, how much is the transportation, is the snorkeling really amazing? Any local shore excursion offered to this destination? thanks in advance.

Hi, Nicole. We have been to Roaran 4 times in the last two years because we love it so much. If you want to do not so touristy things, I recommend an island tour with Cleve's Tours and Adventures. He grew up on the island and will take you anywhere you want and show you stuff you didn't know anything about. And he will pick you up from the cruise terminal. Half Moon Bay is a five minute walk to Seagrape Plantation, a resort owned by his family. Half Moon Bay is much less touristy than West End. I am sure Cleve will make you fall in love with Roatan. Have a great time. Sally and Chuck
