- CharlotteUBGLondon, United Kingdom115 contributionsExcellent visitWe stayed in the forest’s treehouse and really enjoyed our visit. Our stay was arranged through forest guide Mike, who is absolutely lovely. The food in the restaurant was very nice and we spent an enjoyable night in the treehouse, looked after by Francis who was also very friendly and welcoming. Mike took us birdwatching in the morning on the canopy walkway. Mike’s knowledge of birds is really impressive and we had a wonderful morning. We’d highly recommend the forest and the treehouse and certainly Mike as a guide.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 April 2023
- O. Ashley15 contributionsTerrifying yet Terrific Tree Top TravelsAn amazing place to take your family to as they have a small museum, place to eat, gifts, and of course the canopy walk. The hike to the canopy walk does require some (although small) effort. The guide I had explained all the trees we would be seeing as well as their cultural importance to the community. It was a great experience.Visited March 2023Written 7 April 2023
- romadaroWashington DC, District of Columbia1,585 contributionsNot for the faint of heartI had to go because I just couldn’t imagine seven walkways extending over the forest. Fortunately, it didn’t disappoint, but it’s not for the faint of heart. The good thing is that there’s a turn back walkway if you determine that you just can’t do it. But, after that first bridge, you’re committed. It takes about 45 minutes and you always have a park guide to help and encourage. Well worth going.Visited April 2023Written 7 April 2023
- Bas H2 contributionsBeautiful canopy walkKakum National Park is a nice place to go. Not very touristy, which I found positive. Nice exhibition at the start and cool canopy walk through the tree tops. Also recommended to take the extended tour, the walk through the forest itself. The guides spoke English well. Only downside is that there is quite some (plastic) trash in the park. One would expect the park to do some efforts in keeping it cleaner.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 June 2023
- audlebongleKampala, Uganda10 contributionsCanopy WalkThis was a fairly short outing consisting of a climb to the start of the canopy walk. It's not steep, but wear shoes with good grip because if it has rained, it gets slippy up there. It's quite an enjoyable walk through the forest to the canopy and even though I hate heights, I didn't find it scary at all. The guides are good at reassuring you of the safety of it.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 September 2023

- NKTexploresClive, Iowa58 contributionsVisit the park! Practical tips for when you do include:The park is beautiful and our group of 8 (ages 14-75) had a nice time, and would recommend it to others. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to tour the museum to learn about the park prior to your hike and canopy walk. There is a cafe where you can purchase food and beverages, as well as stores selling local and handmade goods that can be patronized before or after the tour. For the canopy tour, we were grouped together with other groups, roughly 40 people in total. Those at the front of the group could hear the tour guide and learn about the trees and other growth in the forest. Accessibility: This is a great tour for all ages, and requires a moderate to good level physical fitness. The path to the canopy portion of the tour is steep, rocky, and especially during rainy season it’s muddy / slippery in parts. It’s about a 20 minute hike, with numerous (steep) stairs on the path to the tree tops. While there are places to stop and rest, the tour groups can be quite large making it difficult to keep track of everyone. What to wear: Wear good sturdy shoes & high socks or long pants to avoid ants, and apply bug spray prior to start of tour. What to bring: Carry water with you to stay hydrated, ideally in a backpack so it’s secured and not at risk of being dropped. A collapsible walking stick may be useful to stay steady on the path. It’s a scenic view and you may wish to take pictures. Bring a camera or phone that can be secured such as via a strap around your wrist. Be careful with hats and sunglasses. Leave anything loose or that might drop/fall behind. The rope bridges seem well secured. Walking together in a group will steady the bridge, whereas going first or separately, you’ll feel more swaying. Those with a fear of heights may find the experience challenging. On the way back, you may encounter a coconut vendor near a resting area with shaded benches - bring cash to partake & rehydrate.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 October 2023

Arrived at the park, paid an entrance fee 5 GHS per person then we chose to walk the canopy for 100 GHS per person. Great value. Excellent climb to where you join the 7 bridges to take in the breathtaking views. ☀️🇬🇭Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 February 2024
- Lulu L1 contributionThrilling view on a bridgeWe went to kakum national park on a school trip in January 2024. Well, I can’t say it was unpleasant. The first minutes, when we climbed the stairs, I thought I would die. I’m not quite used to make so much effort. But then, we arrived to the bridges. I really had fun, although there was some idiot behind me shaking up the bridge. The view was amazing. Anyways if you’re seeking for a pleasant and thrilling moment, you’ve got to go there, but make sure to be prepared of the infernal stairs.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 February 2024

Kakum is an amazing piece of rainforest and place where you can get up-close with nature. We spent a night in one of the treehouses and it was a real highlight of our trip to Ghana. We were met at the reception by our guide, William, and we then had to walk approximately 45-60 mins to reach the house. The walk is not difficult but the heat, humidity and incline mean you need to have a reasonable level of fitness.
We had originally intended to have an evening walk but a spectacular thunderstorm meant we cut that short and instead enjoyed the natural light show as the sky was lit up all around us. The accommodation in the treehouse is basic but comfortable. Be aware there is no light, electricity or cooking facilities. There is a good toilet at the treehouse but you will need to bring everything you want with you and you will want to keep this to a minimum (water, head torch, a small amount of food such as fruit, sturdy shoes/boots).
Once the storm was over, the rainforest came alive with the sounds of insects, frogs and primates which came in waves and changed through the night.
Early next morning we walked back through the forest and then went on the treetop walk. This is a series of rope bridges that are up in the trees that link to platforms where you can view the forest as the day begins. The advantage of the overnight stay is you avoid the day-trip crowds and get there before the park opens to the public. You can also linger and enjoy the views.
After the walk, we headed back to the reception and were given a breakfast as part of the price of the overnight stay at the treehouse which was a nice addition!
Speaking with the staff at the reception, they are really keen to promote the park and what it has to offer. If you give them a call maybe a week before your visit, they can tailor your visit to suit you and include elephant and bird spotting treks, overnight camping and have activities that can suit different ability levels. I wish we'd been aware of this before as I would have loved to do more.
Definitely worth a look and planning your visit as there is so much potential from a visit and I feel we barely scratched the surface.

No! Many people can be on the canopy walk at the same time. You have to walk about 15 minutes mostly uphill/stairs to get to the canopy walk.
