A short drive from Dali, this old town is rapidly moderenising... but relative to other cities still has an old settlement charm. We went through a food tour though there is some more stuff there and around... shop for rose petal tea, tie n dye...More

In my opinion, this is a better old town than Dali. Lots to see and fewer tourists. A tuk tuk tour will only cost 15 CNY, but the cobblestones are hard on the backside. Once you find the main old section, you can dismiss your...More

By far the most pleasant ancient village we have visited in China. While it is hardly untouched by tourism, it has managed to retain some if the small village feeling and is not completely overrun with snack bars, restaurants and souvenir shops catering to tourists....More

We went to this Bai town for the morning market. Very many stalls selling vegetables, meat, fruit, fish and miscellaneous other goods. Easy to spend an hour or more wandering around and enjoying the atmosphere. Even without the market, thus us a Bai town and...More

Xizhou is the actual town where the Linden Center boutiwue hotel is located. It is like stepping back in history. You can take a horse cart tour to see fishermen hauling in their nets. Or walk along the streets and visit a noodle factory, and...More

Nice town that is more authentic than Dali old town, unfortunately is currently under renovation due to a new regulation where all houses must be look like the traditional Bai style. The local specialty - baba, a sweet or savoury chinese pancake is delicious and...More

Like Shuhe of Lijiang, the town of Xizhou is a quieter version of Dali. We found Xizhou much less commercialized and more authentic than Dali old town, which unfortunately is pretty much just wall-to-wall shops selling the same tacky stuff. Especially in the early morning...More

Enjoyed wandering around the town, stopping to shop and sample tea and snacks. Had a lovely dinner at a random restaurant during a rain storm. Kids liked the ride in a horse cart.
