Really attractive old town in quiet and beautiful setting beside a river. This place feels really genuine and authentic

We stopped here overnight on the way from Dali to Lijiang. This is a genuine old town replete with narrow streets, old buildings, people in native dress, artisan workshops for wood carving, riders on donkeys etc etc. It is marvellous to wonder around enjoying the...More

If you are driving from Dali to Lijiang, Shaxi is a great stop but despite the possibility of taking the south road, it is a very bad idea at the moment (Oct 2018). The road is undergoing heavy repair and construction and even a 4WD...More

My son and I spent a delightful day in this ancient town. Dali was the crossroads for the silk road and the north-south travel from Burma and Vietnam. Our guide (Sally) was Bai and helps us buy some very special local gifts.

I like the really ancient town. It is not as commercialised like those in Dali, Lijiang. The house still retained the charms with the old theater stage still intact. There are horses outside the ancient town. It's a rememberance of the once upon a time...More

We had a bit of trouble to reach Shaxi as they were tarmacking the road which was closed. Luckily our guide was full of initiative and with a bit of trouble we were able to get to this lovely old town.

I just spent a nice 2 days in Shaxi after stumbling across it online. My hostel owner in Dali told me there is a twice daily shuttle bus run by a hotel in Dali (which also has one in Shaxi) that non-guests can also ride...More
