Calm, green and refreshing, the city's botanical garden, situated inside the immense Parque Estadual Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI) on the south side of town, provides a beautifully appointed sanctuary for thousands of tropical plant and animal species. The garden opened in 1938 to preserve part of the remaining Atlantic coastal forest, and it functions as a research facility focusing on Brazilian flora and fauna. The garden also shelters the source of the Rio Ipiranga, which figures heavily into national patriotic lore.

The garden is located in a relatively nice nighbourhood of São Paulo so safety isn't a big concern. The place is well preserved and retains many aspects of it's original plan from the 1920's. A beautiful place where couples or families can enjoy.

This is much larger than we expected and the area across the street has more atlantic rainforest. There are some pathways that would allow you to walk in any weather. It is not crowded and a better park than Ibirapuera [which I also like] Small...More

Sunday afternoon in São Paulo, leisure time in botanical gardens mid business trip. The gardens are a marvellous oasis amongst a crazy congested city of 25 million people. Not as splendid as Kew or Cambridge in England but the contrast with the city is stunning...More
