Neighbourhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

We went to CCBB a little by chance, as the Museum of Tomorrow was closed on the Monday. The entrance was completely free - we just had to go to a ticket office to get a printed ticket to scan. We saw a great exhibition on the 1st floor about Heitor Dos Prazeres, a Brazilian samba composer and poet. The building itself is beautiful and has a lot of history. There is also a fab shop on the ground floor that sells art and books mainly made by people from the Amazon, and a cute little café on the mezzanine which I definitely recommend for lunch. All in all, a pleasant discovery that makes you feel like you have stepped into an older version of Rio.

I took the trip to CCBB on 09/15/2023, in the afternoon. Despite being crowded, the visit yielded good photos, both of the building's architecture and of the exhibitions that took place on the 1st (Heitor dos Prazeres is my name) and 2nd floors (Evandro Teixeira. Chile 1973). The building is very beautiful, especially the pillars and the glass ceiling, as well as other elements present in the hall. The building also has a good infrastructure, such as snack bars, toilets, space to charge smartphones, etc. There is no need to book in advance and visits to the main exhibitions (1st and 2nd floors) are free. Both exhibitions were very rich in details, containing paintings, photographs, music, videos, etc., telling about the biography of both personalities. I recommend visiting, considering a 3-hour tour, to appreciate the place and the exhibitions.

Excellent cultural center in an excellent location and free. For me is the best place in Rio to visit for an exposition and other cultural events, like theatre, cinema, instalations with a excellet restaurant (Colombo) and a very good café. It's a triple excellent place.

Horrible place to visit especially if you are a foreigner. There is no reception or ticket box office but just a website that is not user friendly to get tickets and only in Portuguese. When you get to the entrance you are greeted by people that have no idea what is going on and are of no help, nor are they willing to assist you.
This museum is advertised as an international place ready to receive international guests but it is definitely not ready. It’s a very dysfunctional museum. Do not even waste your time trying to visit.

An incredible place, which is well worth visiting when in Rio de Janeiro. There are traveling exhibitions there, which is great as it is always being renewed and every time you visit the place, you will find a different exhibition. The day I was at CCBB I visited the exhibition by Heitor dos Prazeres and also by Evandro Teixeira on Dictatorship and Photojournalism, both were incredible and with a lot of content. There are three coffee options on site, including a Colombo confectionery and a Banco do Brasil café (customers who have a bank card can get a discount). Furthermore, the architecture of the place is wonderful, which makes the experience even more pleasant.

Beautiful modern building (1989), houses a permanent exhibition on the history of Brazilian currency. Interesting for those who have lived in Brazil for several years in the past.
Then there was an exhibition of a modern artist, Sérvulo Esmeraldo, nothing special.
The manual lift with a person who operates it, presses the button and takes you where you want, is curious and criticisable.

Visit: September 2023.
This was my second visit, but it is the only one I have records of. The CCBB building is beautiful and historic and any exhibition there is super interesting. This time I just went to eat at Lilia, but I always recommend this cultural center.

There's ALWAYS a cool exhibition going on, but CCBB goes further. The architecture is luxurious, it has air conditioning, a water fountain and a clean bathroom. It's quiet, safe, the best meeting point to meet friends or "hang out" in the center of Rio. It's always worth a visit!

A building rich in details and culture! Every corner captures your attention! And the best of all; FREE! During the visit you forget that you are in the chaotic center of Rio de Janeiro!
Tip; do some research beforehand on the samples that are on display, as some can be very interesting for children and become a pleasant family outing with the little ones!

Lots of moving around going on when visited. Spacious ground floor area with a small cafe and steps leading to the restaurant. Ground floor area looks fairly impressive.

Written 1 May 2019
Não sei responder sobre a senha, mas com certeza a melhor opção é o metrô, nem sei informar wual ônibus pegar, sempre que vou ao centro prefiro metrô porque de carro é inviável, muito engarrafamento sem contar com estacionamento caro e precário

Hi! I'm hoping to spend a Saturday afternoon in the Centro area, to see the CCBB, Praca XV, Sao Bento, Carioca Aqueduct, etc. I've read in a lot of blogs and articles that I should not visit the area on weekends because it is so unsafe due to the businesses being closed. Can anyone give any insights from personal experience?
Written 9 June 2017
i agree with all the answers above. it´s not safe. mainly on sunday. if you have no choice you can do it on a saturday morning because the shops stays open until 13:00hs.

Written 6 January 2016
O que não falta é táxi por ali. Estamos falando do coração financeiro do Rio. Há também uma estação do metrô a três quadras. O Museu do Amanhã é o MAR ficam a menos de 15 minutos a pé.
