The Municipal Market was built in 1882 and was designed in part by Gustave Eiffel. Many booths offering local foods, spices, home remedies and inexpensive souvenirs. Was just okay. The architecture was the main draw for me. My only purchases were Brazil nuts and bottled water.

Its a 20 minute walk from the Opera House and worth it. You will find food, crafts, souvenirs, and raw food for locals.

All entrances go to a common area, but each entrance has a hall specializing in beef, fish, crafts, etc.

Plan an authentic local's meal here. Some english menus are available, but not everywhere. You will be eating with the locals. I did not see any tourists where I ate.

Beef and fish are sold in the open so expect some aromas. The pile of shrimp was really smelly. Remember its 85 degrees and 90% humidity and some food is not refrigerated. (Did I guess that most of the restaurants get there raw food right there too?)

Crafts are really cheap.

So is lunch, $5 USD.

Spend some hours here and they go get a boat to the Meeting of the Waters.

If you're looking for souvenirs of the Amazon while in Manaus, then there's just no better place that I can think of than this "long rectangular" heritage building (opened back in the late 1800's) which I would call a "one-stop" place in a sense where you can find just every type of Amazonia souvenir big & small from tiny keychains & postcards to some sizeable baskets & face masks & wall hangings of colorful parrots, and yes "quite a bit" better deals were here (although I only know that for certain for the types of souvenir that I bought) compared to those on some floating gift shop on the river during my "Meeting of Waters" tour.

And apart from the Market itself, it's just really a "vibrant & bustling" area around this building along the waterfront with also plenty of individual shops in small to medium sizes (in the "sprawling area" around the waterfront) & also actually another "long market" for meat & vegetables (not a grand building like this one but just more like a "makeshift structure" at just about a few-minute walk from this market). And also, not on the waterfront itself but quite close by at just about a 5-minute walk from this market (a left turn after coming out of the side "not facing" the water followed by a right turn just after passing the building like a big terminal of the Port of Manaus) is the city's "main cathedral" Catedral Metropolitana worth stopping by for a quick visit (mainly just for the nice "facade view" as you go up the curve-shaped stairway after entering the cathedral grounds from the side which is just that directly from the waterfront).

Interesting building, but the market is relatively small. I was (probably naively) expecting some authentic indigenous handicrafts for sale but is is 99% stalls selling cheap made for tourists kitsch...

We were looking forward to visit this market and we were expecting more but walked out a bit disappointed. We usually try one of the food stands in marcados not this time.

We tried to reach this market by about 11AM. There was such a huge traffic jam near the vegetable market that it took us almost one hour to finally reach our destination.
The vegetable market is also worth seeing. The size of the vegetables is noticeable. It's much bigger than what we generally see. They were all piled up like small hills.
The municipal market building has been built by steel structures which were imported from Paris.
As you enter the main market you see nothing but souvenir shops. The souvenirs are pretty good and the price reasonable. We purchased a variety of souvenirs.
There are some good eating joints also.
We packed and brought to the hotel.
Fruits, condiments, fish and other ingredients were also available.

This market was built at the beginning of the 20th century - we will find lots of trinkets etc, but also fresh produce, fish, fruits and herbs

Walk through the fisherman’s market in Manaus and see all the many different kinds of fish being cleaned for sale. Walk outside and see the boats that are bringing in the days catch. Fruit and vegetables of all kinds. Great to see how the locals shop.
