Each Memorial Unit contains a pool, the units are organized per the birth year of each victim. This place is very emotional.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 December 2023
- jongableOakland Charter Township, Michigan762 contributionsMovingGlad we stopped at this memorial, which is not often included in a DC itinerary. The artists’ concept for memorializing those that lost their lives to the evil terrorists is quite interesting. I am also glad to have seen the Pentagon up close. While not architecturally interesting, its size is memorable.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 April 2024
- Arthur MHamilton, Canada1,621 contributionsOnly worth a quick stop. Security is pretty high and certain angles of the building are not permitted. The walk from the Metro station to the memorial was pretty long and arduous. And the memorial itself was pretty small, but knowing that this is the Defense Department's main building, security around the areas was pretty high. Photography of the building itself was not allowed based on the signs, so I gotta be careful not directing my camera at them on fear of being shot. So that said, the security situation did dampen my experience in the memorial. But understandably, safety is the top priority.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 July 2024

9/11 is undoubtedly one of the most important events in contemporary US history. The attack against the world's largest office building still sounds shocking today. This leafy memorial, right outside the Pentagon, is a solemn reminder of the casualties in the plane crash. The place is peaceful but painful for Americans. A short Metro ride from DC is well worth it.

This was a beautiful memorial to the victims of the 9/11/01 plane which crashed into the Pentagon. I wish we could have seen this at night. I bet it is beautiful at night all lit up. Each victim of the tragedy has their own little bench type memorial with their names. Pictures don't do it justice. You can take the subway to the Pentagon stop and the signs will guide you as you walk to the Pentagon and then around the Pentagon to the Memorial. We didn't go in the Pentagon. The walk to/from the subway and around the Pentagon is not short, but it's not too bad either and it's worth it to see the memorial. Now we have seen the 9/11 memorial in NYC and the one at the Pentagon so we need to go to Virginia and see the one there. Remember these were not just military personnel but civilians who were just going to work to do their job on a day seemingly normal like any other. Just imagine going to work and a plane crashes into your office building. So sad for the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy but glad we could visit and pay tribute. Thank you for your sacrifice and may God bless America.

The Pentagon Memorial has matured since it was unveiled, and audio tours enhance your understanding of what transpired at the Pentagon that day, and how the memorial is designed. Very moving for those who remember that horrible day in 2001, and educational for those who do not. A new visitor center is in the works, too.

To get to this, we had to walk through a long tunnel and across a huge parking lot. When you finally arrive you forget about that though as the design is amazing. It really does a great job honoring the people who lost their lives in the attack on the Pentagon.
Overall it is a long walk, but you do get to a stunning memorial when you get there.

Very happy we added this to our day. It was a very long walk in the worst heat but was worth it. It's a very nice, calm and quiet memorial for that tragic day. It also led to great conversation and reflection from our teenagers.

The Pentagon Memorial is currently closed for renovation (July 2020). Website is not updated and indicates work was completed in May. Tried calling before going but was unable to confirm status. We found out the hard way after walking from metro station to find locked gates. I am guessing COVID delayed the work.

This is a sad memorial to see, especially as you think about the attacks on 9/11 and knowing this is where so many died. If you look at the Pentagon from the site of the memorial, you're looking at the side where the plane hit the building. It's a long walk from the Metro stop to the memorial as you have to walk around the Pentagon but it's definitely worth the walk.

Where do you park? I'm coming by car and I'm not using pubic transportation.

I have read that the memorial benches area was closed beginning on Sept 16, 2019 for lighting repair until May 29, 2020. The Memorial Gateway remains open until November 16, 2019. Then that will be closed to the public until May 29, 2020. Has anyone been to the memorial after Sept 16, and can tell me if it is indeed closed? If we are able to only go to the Memorial Gateway, is it still worth a visit? Can you still access the audio tour on your phone from the Memorial Gateway?
Written 7 October 2019
I was there on September 19.
It is worth the visit if you are able to go.
I'm not sure about the audio tour.

No. There is no cost.

I am staying at the Crystal City Marriot. If I leave my car at the hotel, how do I get to the pentagon memorial?
Written 7 November 2017
The easiest way is to get onto the Metro (if I remember correctly, there’s a blue line right there at that hotel) and get off at the Pentagon stop. From there, exit the station and follow the signs around the Pentagon building to the memorial. The memorial is on the opposite side of the building from the WMATA Metro station. It’s a short walk from the train and well worth it. It’s also a fairly short ride from the Crystal City stop to the Pentagon stop.

Is it possible to walk to the Memorial from the Arlington Cemetery?
Written 27 July 2017
Yes, but it's not well-marked. There is a sidewalk from behind the Cemetery's service complex (southeast corner of the Cemetery) that goes along Columbia Pike and then under Washington Blvd into the entrance area for the Pentagon Memorial. It's along busy roads, so be careful.
Written 27 July 2017
How late is the memorial accessible? As in being able to be there to see the lights on?
Written 16 July 2017
It is open when the lights are on. It might even be open 24 hours. There is a Metro stop nearby but there is also public parking.
Written 16 July 2017
Our plan is to park our car at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City Mall (after 6PM) and use the pedestrian tunnel under I-395 to get to the Pentagon Memorial. Can someone tell me where the pedestrian tunnel entrance is -- so I can try and park nearby. Thnx....
Written 16 November 2015
Exit the parking garage onto Army-Navy Drive. Ths is at the north end of the complex, near Macy's. Take sidewalk to the left a very short distance, then cross at the light. You will be in a small parking lot. Walk right through the lot and you will see the entrance to the pedestrian tunnel directly in front of you. When you exit the tunnel keep walking directly towards Pentagon along the specially marked sidewalk. At end of walkway turn left, follow sidewalk to Memorial.

There is a Metro station close to the national cemetery welcome center. Is there paid parking close to Metro that is outside the cemetery?
