One of the best museums in the world!
Jun 2021
The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations is world class. It is not too big or tiring but all the exhibits are top class, covering the various peoples who've held sway in Anatolia (including Mesopotamia) over the millenia.
It is worth seeing this museum at least twice. Once to get a taste of the prehistory of what is now Turkey, and a return visit after you have explored all the sites represented.
Magnificent!

A LOT to take in
Apr 2021
While the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations isn't one of the splashy sexy things to see in Turkey, I highly recommend it if you're in Ankara, as it helps set the stage for the more exciting stuff you'll probably go see. Learning about the Anatolian Civilizations not only helped me understand Turkey, but the ancient world as a whole, as so much of it passed through Turkey. They lay it all out in chronological order, which is nice. For me the most interesting thing was King Midas' skull. How that's survived the years is beyond me, but they had it.

If you can only visit one museum in Ankara, go here
Sep 2020
If you can only visit one museum in Ankara, you should visit this museum.

Located in the heart of the old city of Ankara, this museum has a huge collection of historic artefacts from Anatolia, from pre-historic times to the medieval period. What I was particularly fascinated with - a wonderful collection of ancient gods' statues as well as a very impressive set of Hittite objects. You do not find such a variety in museums in Europe.

Definitely a must see.

This museum is super interesting. There are so many nice artifacts there. The grave stones outside the building were worth seeing too.

Don't Miss It
Aug 2020
This is an outstanding museum, one of the best I have ever visited. The exhibits are fascinating and particularly well curated. This should be on everyone's "must see list" when in Turkey. I visited Ankara specifically to see this place and it was absolutely worth the trip. A circuit covers the history of Anatolia from the Paleolithic era through to the Uratians documented with amazing artifacts. Don't miss it!

My only (small) compliant is that a few items were missing leaving an empty stand with the identity card still beside it. I expect they were on loan to other museums but it would have been nice to have some explanation provided.

Stupendous!! One of the best museums in the world!!
Nov 2019
If you can see only one thing in Ankara, you MUST go to the Anadolu Medeniyetleri Muszesi. It's absolutely stunning! Incredible ceramics, metalwork, wooden items, pottery, statues, cave art, and much, much more! One of the highlights is the famous goddess figurine from 5750 BC.... unbelievable!! Also, perhaps the world's first insulated container, dating back to 7th or 8th century BC. Exquisite 4,000-year old clay "letters" with amazing text! The entire museum is one "Wow!" after another! When you've made one pass through the museum, you'll almost surely want to do what we did and that is go back and see it all again!!
