A reconstructed Japanese field castle
Sep 2018 • Couples
There are two types of Japanese castles. One is called Yamajiro and these are constructed on a mountain and the other is built in a fields.
This one is the latter. The place is surrounded by the river called Chikuma River and it provided a natural defensive wall.
This castle was said to be constructed in 1560 and its original name was Kaitsu.
It was reconstructed in 2004 so now we can only see original castle wall, and the oar in rebuilt. The view looks like a period of Samurai.
But the sections rebuilt only the properties surrounded. Inside there is nothing and it looks like a park.
There are only a few tourists so I recommend this to someone who wants to take photos of Japanese castle.

Accidental find!

Happened to see on the news that there were sakuras blooming in the castle and decided to pop by. The best part, not many crowds!

A lot of steep stairs
Apr 2019 • Friends
This is a lovely building. On arrival we were met by a “shogun” who offered to have his photograph taken with him, amazingly for free. Shoes off, and up to the 6 th floor, via very steep and narrow and at times uneven steps. Certainly not for the unfit. Worth the climb if you can. Very cold day, so feet were freezing, I suggest taking some thick socks.

Wear thick sock and get ready for the climb but a stunning castle

A most beautiful castle and very well maintained. Engineers were there on the day making sure the base was is good condition though they didn't get in the way, in fact they added to the whole outing. Knowing that the Japanese people care so much for this structure is great to see. The structure is wood, wooden floors so shoes off. They give you a bag to carry your shoes about with you. There are 6 floors with steep stair climbs and within each of the main floors are weapons and belongings from the various periods of the castles history. The views from the castle are very good as well. How this castle has lasted all these years is amazing. Guards and guides are scattered throughout the castle to help guide you from floor to floor. The top floor does not allow photography though I didn't see signs on the other floors and I was looking out for them.
There are English speaking guides (volunteers) who can assist though inside the castle, signage is in many languages including English.

History and culture
Jan 2019 • Solo
Just the stone walls and reconstructed gatehouse remain of the castle.
However the near by former Sanada Residence and treasure house makes the location a worthwhile visit if you have any interest in culture and or architecture.
Take bus30 from stop3 beside Nagano station. Get off at the Matsushiro train station bus stop (Matsushiro eki). Buses to and from go past at least every 30min. 1or 2day bus pass can be good value for this location as you can get on and off at will.

Great for Japanese historical lovers
May 2018 • Couples
If you know the history behind this castle like we do this place has a lot of historical meaning. Although today there isn’t much to see, there is some great views of the alps and mountains and it’s an enjoyable walk around the area. The central court yard has many Sakura trees so I’m sure it’s wonderful to see in springtime.

Go during Cherry Blossoms time
Apr 2018 • Couples
We went during the Cherry Blossoms time.
It was the most amazing garden.
Without the gardens the castle is small and not that impressive. So the time of the year you go will make a huge difference.

To see a real 12th century castle.
Jun 2017
Go to Matsushiro by rail walk to castle stop at one of the traditional restaurants just outside of grounds enjoy Nagano Soba. Then start to explore a true castle. The grounds around castle are beautiful. Go into castle count floors on outside of building then explore. You’ll find there are more floors inside then appear from outsid3 of building. Tiny stair cases lead to top. Explore sleeping quarters, weapon area and see how knights protected the shogun. Moat surrounds castle with Security wall.

Nice but
Dec 2017 • Couples
There are only the castle walls and outlines of where buildings once stood. In short, there isn’t much to see. However, strolling or biking around to see the other sights in matsushiro town makes the visit worthwhile. There are three samurai residences as well as some shrines and museums to see.
