Neighbourhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

- tim r137 contributionsGo very early, or don't go at all....The main thing is, get here early. From about 8 am it really starts to get crowded, before then it's possible to get a sense of the awesome, peaceful, presence of the place. It's open 24 hours anyway... It's not a large area, and you could probably walk from one end to the other in about 3 minutes, so take your time...Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023

The area is also beautiful with a pretty lake they offers row boating or a ride on a Japabeee type boat (I forget what they’re called. See pictures. The small town boasts lots of eateries and shops they are worth checking out. The Kimono Forest is also in the town, which is a small area where there are tubes of kimono fabric.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023

Rickshaw ride is too expensive, beware! Good fun and well spent time with family! ThanksVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023
- PatrickBath, United Kingdom21 contributionsCool site, very crowded.Like most of Kyoto’s “instagram” spots, it is absolutely overrun with crowds of people. The view is striking, but if you hate crowds you’re not missing much. It is free though, so worth visiting if you’re on a budget. If you want a nice photo, go at dawn, and get it with the 10 other professional influencers who have also turned up at dawn.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 October 2023
- Norm the NomadAustralia1,243 contributionsGood - but I as a little underwhelmed.Said to be one of the ‘must see’ places in Kyoto is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. It was good but perhaps not as great as I was expecting. Basically a ‘forest’ of towering bamboo stalks creating a path up a mountainside and down to a river. Very nice.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Rodman100Wellington, New Zealand783 contributionsBambooJust a couple of minutes walk from the train station. Best to arrive early as it can get very busy. There are paths through the bamboo forest (no pandas though) fit great photo opportunities. Entrance is free.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 October 2023
- pyt_go_girlCanadian Rockies, Canada169 contributionsArashiyama Bamboo Grove lots to see Don't miss itIt's a sight to behold with all the tall bamboos reaching for the skies. Although since we arrived a bit late in the morning the place was teeming with tourists and so many tour groups. My husband likes to take it slow so we are not early starters. Let's start with the commute. We got to the Arashiyama station no problem and just followed the crowd but we made the mistake of heading towards the bridge by turning left on the Arashiyama shopping street so instead Once you reach the Arashiyama shopping street, look for a small sign that says Bamboo Grove and follow the arrow. That road leading to the bamboo grove is right next to Snoopy Chocolate store and I'll add a picture of it. The walk is quite short maybe like 10-15 minutes but we stopped to take lots of pictures and had to wade through the other tourists and wait for a decent picture perfect shot with no one around which is almost impossible actually so go early if you can. It was a superb day but it did drizzle a bit even when the weather forecast said no rain so always bring a rain jacket or umbrella. We walked along the Tugetsukyo Bridge and it's a nice walk but again many tourists. If you walk away from the shopping street, this is the way to the Monkey Park which we chose not to go walked along the Shopping Street. Glad we had an early lunch because restaurants here are pretty expensive not surprising. Lots of trinkets souvenirs snacks and restaurants. We also walked along side streets since they were so pretty. 6iu can spend the whole day here.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- SputnikSingapore, Singapore20 contributionsArashiyama Bamboo ForestArashiyama Bamboo Forest is a must-visit attraction for us as we have heard so much about this world-famous site. Because we were based in Osaka, we bought the Hankyu 1 Day Tourist Pass to experience the trains along Hankyu Lines. From Arashiyama Station it was a pleasant short walk to Tenryu-ji Temple. We visited the Zen garden of the temple and walked to the back of the garden. From there, we exited the garden and entered the bamboo forest. We enjoyed the short walk along the path through the bamboo forest. Because we reached the place at 10:30am it was a little crowded. But it was orderly so it was not a major issue except that we could not take photographs without capturing other tourists. So it is important to head out early to avoid the crowd. The forest was very well maintained and the air was fresh. So it made for a very pleasant stroll.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 December 2023
- Tracy MAuckland, New Zealand139 contributionsNatural light plus bamboo equals exquisiteEarly in the morning is key, to catch a memorable photo of this exquisite setting. So tranquil and spiritual until the hoards of people arrive and then, it would be a challenge. We also enjoyed Arashiyama town. It was a cute but vibrant setting. It was autumn when we went there, so the beautiful deep red and golden leaves set the scene. We would have loved to have spent more time there. I know, I know, three stars for such a gorgeous sight? Hear me out. Yes, the insanely tall bamboo was truly gorgeous, and the sound it creates when the bamboo hit each other is quite magical. However, trying to avoid all the tourists while trying to enjoy the sight was quite a task. I guess we arrived too late, large groups of tourists were already there. We enjoyed the area behind the bamboo forest, and the shopping street. Note for the train heading to arashiyama: don't check in at your first stop, you have to pay 220 yen (in cash, or with your ic card) when you get out of the train, regardless of where you get out.

Again, we used our JR Pass, this time to take the JR train to Saga-Arashiyama Station. It took about half an hour.
We followed the flow of crowds. It was quite a distance. We were strolling and enjoying the scenery of Japanese houses when we caught sight of light brown bamboo groves. We thought those were the famous 'Arashiyama Bamboo Groves' and were rather disappointed, until the younger ones laughingly told us those were not it, that the actual Bamboo Groves was still a distance away.
Excitedly, we quickened our pace. When we finally caught sight of the actual green Bamboo Groves, we were very happy and began taking pictures. However, as we continued to walk about a further 10 metres or so, we all caught our breath!! At a distance away, the place where the path split into two, with more light around that intersection, was the most awe-inspiring, mesmerizing scenery ever! We were totally speechless and enthralled!
Wow! So, this was it! How delighted we were! My sisters quickly took videos. Because of the ongoing crowds, it was rather hard to take personal pics.
And it was quite an impossible feat to catch what we really saw with naked eyes on handphone! It took us quite sometime, using different spots and angles. We gave up in the end. Perhaps it would need a professional cameraman. As it was, we had to make do with what we caught.
We continued to walk to the exact spot which had so captivated us, but it was not as beautiful there, as from a distance.
The younger ones were anxious to finish the climb to the peak, to see monkeys and left us to explore the bamboo groves on our own.
Truly, this is a 'must-visit' if one visits Kyoto. We were so glad we made it.

When I first entered the bamboo garden, I felt very underwhelmed. There were few bamboos on either side, and then it got over. However thankfully we kept walking and we were greeted by huge bamboo on both sides for quite a distance. We went around 5 pm, it was getting slightly dark and was the perfect time of the day. You won’t be walking inside a bamboo forest though, just will have huge bamboo on both sides and the central road is paved for walking. No vehicles are allowed, so it makes for a nice stroll despite quantity of tourists. It is worth the hype, and we’re glad we did it resulting in very picturesque photos.

We only thought this was just a massive forest with bamboo and that's all it was, but we were wrong. We saw a beautiful lake from atop a lookout and went for a boat ride as there were boats you could hire for an hour and go for a row along the river.
There was a bit of construction going on while we were there but if you go when the cherry blossoms are out it would be very pretty.
If you want to pay ¥1000 you can walk through a garden and have a Japanese tea and some biscuits either before or after you look around a traditional house and a garden

Visited here in January, it was cold and it was crowded but not overwhelming. It was a pleasant experience. We chose not to see the monkeys, we stopped and had some tempura and warm sake. Very glad we visited here, we didn't spend more than a few hours here, but very happy we experienced this beautiful zen day.

If you want to benefit from the premium air quality and the amazing sun-rise scene you can witness from this amazing forest? Rise up early in the morning. I visited thus place early morning around 4:30am. This place is absolutely breath taking with the birds in the background and the sky slowly opening up the tays of sunshine? It’s the ultimate sanctuary for meditation! The feeling is very powerful 👍🏽

Lets be clear, its' a nice place.
But most of the time, you will not enjoy a peaceful stroll in a bamboo grove, feeling like you traveled the old days of the samurai... Instead, you will be surrounded by Instagram photo snapping tourists, and many shouting to each other like no one else is there. And most yukata wearing girls you'll see will be tourists.
It's also important to remember that this is not some wild bamboo field laying around for tourists to enjoy. The owners are cultivating bamboos to use them and sell them for craftmen. So please refrain from writing your name on it, or throwing your trash around...

We have visited here many times. For our November 2019 visit, we decided we would stay for 3 nights to be fully immersed in the place.
One advantage of staying for several nights is that you have a lot of freedom to decide where to go and when to go. You can check out the crowds, the weather, and, in our case, the state of play of the foliage. Day trippers are encouraged to come early to avoid the crowds - if you spend the night, it is very easy to do this and the first hour or so of the morning you almost have the area to yourself. Another advantage of staying overnight is you don’t feel rushed to see everything possible in one day; you can spend time walking the back streets and neighborhoods to get a feel for the place and not just rush through the tourist hot spots. We found a few small neighborhood temples which were very peaceful and were likely never visited by many tourists.
One disadvantage of staying overnight is that most restaurants close early. We self-catered for 2 of the 3 nights, taking a very long walk to the supermarket from our hotel to stock up for 2 evening meals so we could cook in our hotel suite’s microwave. The hotel staff could not believe that we walked the distance from the hotel to the Fresco Saga Supermarket and back, but we did.
Stay overnight, even for one night if you can, it’s worth it.

If you are in Kyoto this is a stop you must make simply because it is so iconic. It’s only a 20 minute train ride from Kyoto station on the JR line. The monkey garden is nearby but it closed at 4:30pm and we missed it.

Bamboo forest is a great attraction, but it is not the only one in this wonderful town. There is a temple. There are great looking houses all with different architecture in narrow streets. There is a river and main street with small shops and restaurants with great views. There is a train every 10-20 minutes from Kyoto station and other neigbooring places. One can spend an entire day in this lovely town.

Not very sure was there any sign but if there isn’t you can use Google map live and it will arrow point you to the destination. For my case, I just follow the crowd and it a 1.5-2km away.

How experienced a hiker does one have to be to so this hike? My husband and I are in our mid-70's and will be coming to Japan (first visit) in October (we hope!). I'm trying to find transportation in English to get pre-acquainted with the public transport around Kyoto. I am MOST interested in the Netsuke Museum near the Mibu Dera Temple. Streets lined with older architecture interest us also. Hordes of tourists, do not! Thank you! KatB.

You dont have to be experienced hiker to do this is fairly level for most of the way .The public transport in Kyoto is very easy to use good train and metro system and the buses are easy enought o use as well and if you have the Google translate app on your phone it is a good addition

Hi, there is no parking area near the forest that I can remember, you would need to park in the town and walk which is only a short distance or walk from your hotel depending on the location.

I want to take some (long-exposure) photos at Arashiyama before visitors arrive and when there are just a few folks there very early in the morning. How early should I arrive? Getting up at 4-5 is not abnormal for photographers. Are there trains that early from Kyoto station? I'll be at the Cross Hotel Kyoto.
Written 4 September 2019
Correct! It would be nice if you come to the place as early as you can. 7 in the morning would be a perfect time. Most of the trains and buses starts operating around 5AM. But I would recommend to use Google maps and it would be of great help for planning your trip all around Japan as it is accurate based on my experienced of course.
Enjoy!

Ciao Graziano
