This museum is situated in an old church which gives it great surroundings. The Museum itself is fascinating, not the topic you'd usually find in a museum but well done Russia. Probably about a third of descriptions have an English translation and no audio guide...More

The Russian State Arctic and Antarctic Museum was established in November 1930 as part of the Soviet Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, but was not opened until six years later. The museum is located in Avraam Melnikov's Neoclassical church from the 1820's and remains the...More

This church building belongs to museum since 1930s. But in 2016 there are some reasons to close museum and return building to church. It means that ALL beautiful dioramas from 1930s will be destroyed!! So don't miss the chance to visit it. Even if you...More

This is for sure an uncommon museum, both for the topic - Russian/Soviet polar explorations - and for the setting - a former church. The museum is on two floors. The lowest is dedicated to the exploration of the Arctic region by Russian and Soviet...More

Catch the Metro to Dostoevskaya Station. Outside to Kolokonaya Ulitsa, right into Marata, and on the next corner, in what is obviously an old church, is the Arctic and Antarctic Museum. On several levels, the places that would have once held religious paintings now have...More

The place isnworth the visit but however will be more fruitful if there was narration in English for every exhibit. For non Russian speaker like us we were quite lost as there was no translation provided. Nevertheless, the exhibits were still interesting to look at.

Unique museum...the great discoveries of scientists and travelers, a lot of artifacts, a small plane that saved the life of some crew, great history....Not comfortable for wheel-chair, only 1st floor is accessible. Not open every day.
