We owe basically three Empresses for this extraordinary piece of architecture: Ianna Ioannovna, Elizaveta Petrovna and Catherine the Great. Even the most blind and tenacious members of the revolution were unable to destroy totally the imperial splendor that they achieved for most of their rooms. Fortunately for mankind we have the restored Winter Palace to enjoy. The Winter Palace became... More

Let me start this review by stating the obvious, a visit to the Hermitage is essential when travelling to St Petersburg. The sheer spectacle of this wonderful feat of architecture is just astonishing. You begin by walking through a large court with the palace shadowing your every step. Then you join what i describe as the most torturous queuing process... More

Caravaggio is still being restored and its been 2 years. The Rembrandt room is impressive. Leonardo's two portraits are worth seeing. The most impressive thing is the golden peacock - but particularly the story of uneducated mechanic who got it working again.

Since we were on a cruise tour, we were able to arrive before the crowds of tourists arrived. However as time went on it became more and more crowded. Despite the number of people, it was an amazing museum filled to the brink with fabulous art works and historical items. It took us many hours to tour the entire building... More

This was definitely a show stopper for us! It was better than we imagined and just spectacular! Ever room, every corner, every space is simply amazing! You could spend all day here and not see it all. The palace itself is a work of art and you are in awe everywhere you go. We did however, find it very hard... More

The old hermitage is wonderful to visit as it has so many and such varied exhibits. Going in late December gave the freedom to really get up close to wonderful pieces of art. The new Hermitage is now open showing the impressionist collection. This was really good as it is spacious and even less crowded. They still have some rooms... More

Get tickets in advance to avoid the queues. Your hotel will do this for you. Our hotel had a ticket machine in the foyer. Make sure to get tickets for the Gold and Diamond rooms as well and check the times of the tours for those rooms.
