Very interesting historical museum in St.Paul and St.Peter Fortress
Nov 2018 • Friends
Commandant's House is one of the historical buildings located in St. Paul and St. Peter Fortress, the oldest fortress in St. Petersburg. The building was built in 1740 and obviously it wasbthe house, where the Commandant of the city lived. Also the place was a very deep prison. Now, it is an historical museum, where you can learn how was the life for people before the Russian Revolution in the beginning of the 20th Century. Very interesting place.

After you pay a combined ticket for all the exhibition you are waiting to see something that will excite you..But the only things that you see is some old clothes and chairs..Some old tables and nothing else..Maybe also a map for all the fortress but nothing exciting..I think the ticket for this exhibition is not worthing at all..We are disappointed from all this exhibition..Is not worth it to lose your time for this..

It could be improved...

This house hosts the local history museum of Saint petersburg. Don't be put off by the first floor, which is horrible and smells funny. It gets better later on. However, almost everything is in Russian and information in English is rather basic.

We only went here because it was part of the combo ticket, but it turned to be one of the best museums at the fortress. It shows the every day history of St. Petersburg. great for people who are interested in history like me, but not great if you are not so interested in history like the rest of my family and it is already late in the afternoon. Very well done.

A hidden gem museum -- see how everyone in St. Petersburg lives up to 1918!
Jun 2016 • Family
Make sure to see the Commandant’s House, within the Peter and Paul Fortress, a museum to the history of St. Petersburg up to 1918. This museum didn’t emphasize the monarchy and the palaces as much as the development of the rest of the city, providing a lot of great insight into what life was like over this period for everyone else in addition to the aristocracy. There were displays on the development of the physical layout and spread of the city, types of buildings, residential architecture, transportation systems, banking, manufacturing, communications, film, and much more. The museum typically had a single lengthy sign in English in each room, plus of course much more in Russian, but you could still enjoy and appreciate it just knowing English. The museum is not glamorous, and in fact at the moment some of the first ground-floor rooms are under renovation making it look particularly bare at the start, but there's really a lot of great material upstairs and when you then return to the first level. Enjoy the palaces and cathedrals of St. Petersburg, but also be sure to take in this museum to learn about everyone and everything else.
