I was in Yaroslavl' maybe fifty times, this time around we visited it together with my wife in December but I'd never felt like taking a picture of this Medieval Russian prince. Whenever I look at it it seems to me kinda iconic, soulless. Trolleybus wires completely spoil the impression plus it stands on sort of an island surrounded by roaring and honking vehicles to such an extent that it's just mortal to approach it.
Prince Yaroslav the Wise aka Yaroslav Moodry (not Mudry!), founder of this city, was half Swedish, by the way. His second wife was Swedish as well - she was born in Swedish Sigtuna, was a daughter of king Olof Skötkonung of Sweden and her name was Ingegerd Olofsdotter. She became grandmother of one of greatest Russian princes Vladimir II Monomakh.
As to me, I'd move this monument to a quieter place - either to a square in front of the world-famous Church of Ilya the Prophet (first church with such a name was founded by him, by the way) or maybe instead of a huge black idol of Vladimir Lenin (afro-communist?) who's done absolutely nothing for the city and has never even visited it.

Yaroslavl is an old city but Yaroslavl the wise, the bear, that axe and on the whole the symbol that is used everywhere is what gives this city a special character. and if there should be a monument in the main square of the old town, it should definitely be its founder

Be prepared to see this statue of Yaroslavl the Wise in the traffic circle in Bogoyavleniya Square in the vicinity of the Spassy Monastery and Tserkov Orthodox Church. Our city tour bus slowed down going around this traffic circle so I was able not only to get a good photo of this statue, but also to get a close up look at it. The statue is placed on a tall plinth and shows a bearded Yaroslavl the Wise holding a sword to protect the city from invaders or to kill the brown bear associated with his name. In his other hand, he carries a small model of a Kremlin tower, perhaps indicating some association with Russian nobility or that he was a ruler of the land. Each of the 4 sides of the plinth have a bas relief showing an event in the city founder's life. There also is a founding stone for the city that commemorates this man that is close to the Assumption Church, and a statue of a brown bear, the city's symbol, in the market place. He also has his image on the Russian 1000 Ruble. To be remembered 1000 years after one has passed away is some indication of the significance of Yaroslavl the Wise to the citizens of Yaroslavl.

Statue located in the center of traffic circle. There’s no pedestrian crossing to the statue. This statue is printed on 1000 luble bill. So you can take picture with 1000 luble bill in front of this statue. You can leave car in the free parking lot near statue.

This is a monument to the "founder" of Yaroslavl, however it is in the middle of the city traffic and at one end of a round about. The statue itself is nothing special but it deserves a better location.

The monument is located in the middle of town where it does not stand out as it is in the middle of traffic.

The monument is not impressive that much. The location is inconvenient - it's in the middle of busy square, you can't get close to the monument.

Monument to the founder of Yaroslavl, Yaroslav the Wise, was recently in the middle of Bogoyavleniya Square (next to Spasso-Preobrazhenskiy or Transfiguration of the Savior Monastery). It is very compact and highly symbolic (a model of one of the towers of the old Kremlin, sword to protect the city, and images on the base depicting Yaroslav slaying the bear, which became the symbol of the new city) Unfortunately, the square is very busy with traffic rendering the monument inaccessible. Keep in mind that it is facing south, so the best way to capture it would be from the little park in front of the church. Bring your 1,000 rouble banknotes along to compare the image on it to the real thing.
