But this forever young beauty is as charming as before.
I visited it in September, on a bright golden autumn weekday. The church was open since it was rather warm. I stepped inside. Practically no-one around. Spell-binding old frescoes, icons, a magnificent iconostasis, fragrance of frankincence, soft crackling of burning candles. And silence. Enveloping silence.
I love you, Ilya.
It's somewhat puzzling, however, that one has to pay an entrance fee to see that splendor. They say it's a museum. Okay, it is. But first of all, it's a place of worship, a place to pray. For dough?
Still, strongly recommended! A unique drawcard any city on earth would be proud of.
(Parking nearby is a challenge - too many official institutions around. Try smaller streets a bit further.)

This is my precious princess. To my mind it is one of the most beautiful and charming churches in Russia I saw. Neither the Dormition (aka Assumpton) Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin, Saint Basil's Cathedral on its Red Square or the Church of the Savour on Blood in St Petersburg can match this masterpiece in its ethereality and elegance. A diamond is small but valuable.

Whilst doing our tour of Russian we visited many churches most of which were not functioning as Church but this was. Amazing frescoes and icons inside. We were also treated to a Capella performance by 4 men which was fantastic.

This church is for some unbelievable reason not on Unesco list. So I enjoyed all alone the quietnes for amere 120 rr.Truly magnificent mural paintings. When rainy outside: no visits allowed since damp clothes will damage the interiors, the paint might get moulded. Actually I liked this one more than inside the Kreml which is on Unesco list. Judge however for yourselves!

A very pretty and ornately done church. The frescos are lovely. The town is a cruise boat stop and it is worth wandering through the town or taking a walking tour if offered. You will do a lot of walking if you do.

This is a working church, so ladies have to have the appropriate head covering and men remove hats, but once inside, you are craning your neck as you look at the floor to magnificent ceiling murals, and attempt to follow the story line the artists had on display for you. Photography is allowed and good luck getting it all into a frame that brings out the artistry and the magnificent colouring. Formerly a private church of a rich Boyar family from the days of the czars, no effort was spared in its decorations which we are lucky to view after the upheavals of the 1920's when a lot of these buildings were destroyed. Long may it stand!

Another location visited on our river cruise but the story of Elijah the Prophet was so well explained to us by our local guide who was excellent. The frescos are well worth seeing and it is a beautiful interior.

Beautiful Yaroslavl style church with perfectly preserved colorful frescoes depicting the life of Elijah the prophet and the life during the 17th century. Has 5 blue green domes and a bell tower. Frescoes have scenes of weddings, animals and every day work. Also, there are pretty gardens around the church. Definitely must see church.

All of the churches in Russia are so striking and lovely. Most of not all have onion domes and we learned that the number of domes is representative. For example, three domes represents the trinity.
This church isn’t that old. But is beautiful.
