Theater square
Apr 2021
Teatralnaya square as its name says is a famous square in the Russian capital adorned with several theaters around. The main star is of course the iconic Bolshoi theater.
Apart from that there's the CUM (Centralni Univerzalni Magazin) mall, once a classic Soviet all goods department store, now a fashion mall.
Across the street is monument to Karl Marx - father of Socialist learning.

Nice square in a very central area of the city
Sep 2020
This translates as Square of theatres and it means that many theatres are located near by with the most famous one Bolshoi (Big) Theatre. This is the place to meet and discuss the performances by those who love to visit many theatrical performances of the city. Russians love their theatres and are very proud of them.

Square of theaters
Aug 2019
When walking through central Moscow there is a big chance that one will see all its main squares (ploshad), which are close to each other and often interconnected. From the Red Square it just goes past the State Historical Museum to reach the Manege Square (Manezhnaya), which leads in the east to Revolution Square, which connects in the north to Theater Square. From here again it is only about 200m to go to the Lubyanka Square along the Theater road.

By the Theater Square (Teatralnaya) is a combined Metro Station for different lines: Teatralnaya and Okhotny Ryad. As the name suggests a reason to come here is to go to one of the theaters here: especially the famous Bolshoi with a neoclassical façade from the mid 19th century, but there is also the Maly Theater and the Moscow Operetta.

For shopping one can go to the Tsum Luxury Department Store, which is here as well. And some will be even staying by this square, at the Hotel Metropol in Art Nouveau style, the only large hotel in the city, whose beginnings go back to tsarist days.

Christmas decorations

The plaza in front of the Bolshoy is boasting several gigantic kokoshnik or women’s head tiaras. The park although stripped of plants in the flowerbeds is nice to visit and seat on a bench if you have warm winter clothing.

Very nice square
May 2018 • Solo
Very nice in all respects, though a small area. Initially, it was a regular rectangle with equal-height buildings on the perimeter. This condition could not be sustained, but visually the area did not lose anything, and the hotel "Moscow", which violated the outlines of this part of the area, nevertheless perfectly fit into its ensemble. Although the central focus of the square is, of course, the famous Bolshoi theatre. Improvement of the area-benches, alleys, flower beds, etc. - due to the small size of the area look more nominal and decorative elements. Although here both fountains, especially the fountain Vitali clearly adorn its appearance - unlike awkward monument to Marx next to it.

A must visit in Moscow
Aug 2018 • Family
We visited Theater Square to view the Bolshoi Theater. It is an imposing building with the statue of Apollo at the top, holding the reins of a four horse chariot. Theater Square, is a square of many theaters, as the Youth Theater is the cream and white building to the left, and to the right is the State Academic Maly Theater. The Bolshoi Theater has an interesting history, as it was the site of the Petrovsky Theater which burnt down in 1805. The new Bolshoi Theater was rebuilt in 1825, but was destroyed by fire in 1853, and again rebuilt to it's current style. In 1910, the square was separated into the north and south squares. The Vitali fountain became the highlight of the south square. The existing fountain, in Theater Square, was built in 1949.

In 1919, a statue of Yakov Sverdlov was placed in the Square, which was renamed in his honour. It wasn't until 1991, that the Sverdlov statue was removed and the name Theater Square restored. This square is easily reached by subway red Line 1, and getting off at the Okhotny Road Station. On exiting the station, walk east for 5 minutes on Theater Street, and the Bolshoi Theater will be seen. If you exit the subway on the right side of the street, use the pedestrian underpass to cross the road. The Green subway line 2, stops at Theater Square, which is the southern section, and this is a slightly longer walk.

The only statue of Marx?
May 2018 • Couples
From our very limited tourist experience of Moscow we sensed a reluctance by locals to talk much about the 20th century political history of Russia. Our tour certainly tended to focus on the earlier history of the, now, Federation.
The statue of Karl Marx in Teatralnaya square is allegedly the last remaining statue of Marx in the city which we found mildly surprising given Marx’s pivotal role in influencing Russian thinking in the early part of the 20th century.
The statue is in the square immediately adjacent to the Bolshoi Theatres and an easy walk into Red Square.
The square itself is pretty non-descript but offers a photo opportunity for the main Bolshoi Theatres if you can see them beyond the endless line of daytime buses.

A rather ugly square.
Oct 2017 • Couples
While being Moscow's main theater square, we found the square rather ugly and chaotic.
Some local "finesse" was missing, big time.

Moscow's main theatre square
Oct 2017 • Solo
This fairly large square is notable as the location of the Bolshoi Theatre at one end and a statue of Karl Marx in the middle next to a large boulevard. There are a few other imposing buildings around but it's probably not worth making a special journey here just to see the square.
