Once, it was the entrance gate to Shikoku, and National Railway’s ships were linking Uno and Okayama. Now, there is a bridge between Shikoku and Honshu, and National Railway became JR. But Takamatsu Port is still an important terminal, and from this port there are service to Shodoshima and other small islands.

The port in Takamatsu is amazing. Clean, large and accommodating, it is pleasant to visit and located in a highly convenient area of town. Everyone is most helpful and a variety of boats are available to your destination.

I have walked on the port many times, caught many ferries, met a lot of friends, and enjoyed many cool beverages at the Takamatsu Port area. It is open. It is beautiful. It smells great. It gets you to all the islands you want to visit. There are not so many very close shops and cafes, but they are within a few minutes walk.

As you are busy running from one art experience to another, or from one historical, religious, or cultural location to another, take an hour to just hang out around the port. The sunset is really beautiful and you are guaranteed to take some wonderful photos there.

A lot of people see this as a place to catch a ferry but it is so much more. The port itself is great for fishing, walking, bike riding, and much more. There is a restaurant here but be warned they sometimes require reservations and there is a dress code. You can walk along the ocean while your kids dip their feet into the nearby water (not the ocean.) Right across from here there is always some form of art on display, local talents perform at the outdoors area and they do monthly or weekly movies. The movies are outdoors and they are always kid friendly. You can't go wrong here.

The Takamatsu Port offers a great view of the Takamatsu area as one waits to board or after they have arrived from a trip. There are a few store a few minutes walk away so it is good to check them out.

This is where to go to catch a ferry to the various islands in the Seto Inland Sea. The staff here is very helpful and speaks competent English. Also a good place to watch the sea view and sunset.

It is a good place to see the sun set. Besides, there were speed-boats and ferries to those nearby islands.

Besides being the gateway to the several islands reachable by ferry, the harbor and its pier are nice places to walk around, clean and safe.

I was here mostly for the ferry rides to the islands. Since I am here for the Setouchi Triennale, there were a lot of staff speaking English, Japanese and Chinese that are helping out. Even without the staff, the guidance of where the ferries go are clear. I didn't particular walk the stretch, but I could imagine it being a comfortable one.
If you are looking for any sightseeing, the port should be a great view for sunsets and also the Takamatsu Castle stands right next to the port.

Wonderful walk out along the pier - a good 800 metres into the sea. Nice to see people fishing and ferries coming in, with great scenery and a rarity in Japan - totally free!
